Susan had, lately, been quite absorbed in reading the small stack of books she had picked up at their last port of call--with the help of a new acquaintance, of course. But even one who devoured books needed the refreshment of a pot of tea, every once in a while. Which was what had Susan out of her room and walking with purpose towards the kitchen.

Where hopefully she would run into neither 'Dee' nor that strange new cook. That would be too much.

Edgeworth was on his way to the kitchen, but for a far different reason. After a series events (mostly Reynolds and Bonnefoy acting like...well, Reynolds and Bonnefoy), he decided that something had to be done. Perhaps a surprise inspection was in order...

Along the way, though, he found something different: a glimpse of the teacher, the duchess Susan. In a way, it was rather fortunate; there were some things he needed to discuss with her as well. He cleared his throat and approached her.

"Excuse me? Ms. Sto-Helit?"

The greeting roused her from her thoughts, and she turned her step smoothly towards the first mate. "Commander Edgeworth," she responded pleasantly, pausing in her stride. "What can I do for you?"

"I was hoping that I could talk to you about your lessons," he replied. "Do you have some time to spare?"

"Of course," she inclined her head in ascension. "In fact, I was just on my way to find myself a pot of tea, provided I can, ah, dodge the enthusiasms of our head cooks." She hoped he read between the lines on that.

"Would you like to join me, or shall we speak elsewhere?"

Edgeworth raised his eyebrows, and understood her quite clearly. While he still wished to speak with them, he certainly didn't want to do it with a lady present.

"Perhaps it would be prudent to talk somewhere less...busy," he replied. Ha, busy. That implied that anyone other than Ms. Andrews did actual work in there. However, there was little need to shatter the polite fiction they started to build.

"We can go back to my quarters, if you wish."

"Ah, yes," Susan agreed, quite amiable to the suggestion of not having to chance facing the perils of the kitchen.

"That would be very kind of you." She'd heard he had rather the collection of tea in his quarters. IT would be fascinating to find out if this was true.

"It's nothing at all," he said as he led the way back to his cabin. "It would do well to have a pleasant place to talk, yes?"

"And free of distractions," she added, following along behind him. It was partly in jest, but mostly serious. "I quite agree."

He responded with a slight smile just before he quickened his pace. Soon enough they reached the door to his cabin, and he stepped ahead to open the door for her.

"After you, Ms. Sto-Helit."

"Thank you," she responded automatically, sweeping past him into the room, surveying it discreetly. It was a rather nice office, though she supposed she should have expected so much from the second-in-command on the vessel.

"You're quite welcome," he said as he closed the door behind her. "I'll have the tea ready in a moment - please, make yourself comfortable."

Susan settled herself into what was clearly the visitor's chair, giving him a nod of thanks in passing. "Things seem to be going rather well, these days," she commented comfortably on the state of affairs aboard the ship.

Well, she supposed no giant monsters attacking, whether in the form of spider clanks or chocobo hunters, was always a good sign. Most people could agree on that much.

While Susan made herself comfortable, Edgeworth made his way to a small table that held a tall, vaguely conelike lump of metal set upon a steel basin. It was a rather striking masterpiece of the bizarre; while the body was smooth and polished, it and its base were littered with tubes and dials, while a handle poked out from the top and a crank budged out from the bottom. Some people might have called the contraption bizarre. Some people might have called it grotesque. The more tactful might have told a half truth and said it was unique ( ... )

Susan was quietly intrigued by the device. She'd heard of such contraptions, but the rather bizarre appearance the thing both amused her and did nothing to put her off the tea. Instead, she merely took it as the sign of someone serious about his tea.

She could get used to being acquaintances with a person like that.

"Hopefully, though life and history would give us little hope for such a prospect," she pointed out dryly. "But a little continuance of this break would do no one harm."

"Quite agreed," he said, as he scooped the perfect amount of tea into his strainer. "However, should our good fortune run dry, we should be able to handle the situation accordingly."
