Freaked out over being sick as he was, there were still things he needed to do as a navigator, and he had every intention of doing his work before anyone could find fault in it. The quartermasters had seen his charts already, and presented no revisions before they sent it off to be approved by the first mate, but he wanted to make sure.

So there he was in the navigation room, pouring over his charts and nursing a mild headache.

Before they could leave, he needed to doublecheck the routes. While Edgeworth wasn't normally worried about the navigators' abilities, Itou's latest illness left him with some concerns.

All the more reason to check up on him. Edgeworth strode into the room, his back straight and his attention on the other man on the room.

"Lieutenant Commander," he greeted. "What do you have for us?"

Itou looked up at the newcomer, slightly startled to find the first mate there of all people, but otherwise unfazed.

"Commander Edgeworth," he greeted carefully, straightening up from where he had been examining a chart. "I was just double-checking the charts I submitted recently. Everything's in order, though I'm still considering between these two points," he gestured. "How may I help you?"

Edgeworth walked closer to get a better look, and said briskly, "I just wished to know how your work was coming along."

He stood next to Itou and stooped over to peer at the two points. His eyes narrowed, and he asked, "What issues are you having with this part of the course?"

Itou refrained from making a noise of irritation, unused to being questioned and unwelcoming of the fact. Curtly, he pointed the pencil he had been using to one point. "Safer," he said, and pointed at the other one, "And this one is faster by a day."

"Hmn."

He peered down at the map, and asked, "What risks can we expect from the shorter route? Will they present a serious risk to the ship?"

"The shorter route will require the Victoria II to go through a pass between mountains. The weather there can become unpredictable, and it's a good place for bandits to lie in wait for victims. The Victoria II can handle that easily, of course," Itou shrugged, "But delays would defeat the purpose of a shorter route in the first place."

Edgeworth frowned as soon as Itou mentioned the bandits. While he normally wouldn't be concerned, he wouldn't be surprised if they tried to take advantage of the races. Then again, he doubted that any petty thieves would be foolhardy enough to face the Victoria II head-on, but...

He straightened his back and turned to face the navigator. "I'll trust your judgment on this," he said. "Report to me as soon as you've reached a decision."

Itou raised an eyebrow at that. As far as he knew, his work ended with plotting out possible routes, which the first mate or captain would approve. To be given the opportunity to decide the ship's route certainly opened a lot of future possibilities to him.

"Understood, sir," he said with a slight inclination of his head, turning back to the charts and retrieving his compass from under the sheets of paper at his side. He had already decided, but it seemed awkward to present his decision immediately. Itou would tell him in perhaps half an hour, then.
