Matthew had been considerably less injured than his twin. Thinking back on the battle field, he wasn't completely sure when he'd lost consciousness. The last the he remembered was hurling his journal at the cactuar after Alfred's revolver had run out of ammo. Ah, in hindsight that might not have been a very smart decision.

He awoke sometime before Alfred. Did he faint? He must have, but at least his help had come not soon after because he was still in one peice and Alfred was still breathing in the bed next to him.

He'd tried to get out of bed, but found his shoulder as well as his right leg were protesting anything like that for a good, long time.

The sound of Alfred stirring earned a curious glance from his brother. Oh thank god, he was awake. Matt sat up and went about to greet him when he saw the look on his face.

Oh no.

Alfred tried to get up again. His leg wasn't asleep. It was broken. And- and! His eye! That was--! And this was--! This place was the infirmary!! His voice didn't seem to want to work for him just yet, and neither did most of his body, now that he thought about it. That didn't stop him from trying to forcefully move through sheer, Heroic will power. In his current state, he he'd yet to notice his brother.

He was starting to panic. This wasn't good, his brother panicking was not good. Not with him trying to pull himself out of bed. He looked around. They were alone in the infirmary. Dammit, where had the doctors gone?

No matter, Matthew was already half out of bed by his own force of will. He didn't want Alfred freaking out and hurting himself even more, regardless of how much pain shot up his right leg as his feet touched the floor.

"Alfred. Alfred, lay down," he said, trying to get his balance.

Oh, Alfred was having none of that. He kept struggling to get out of bed. He was so close to the edge now! Just a little bit more! The sound of Matt's voice only helped to strengthen Al's resolve, even as his body screamed at him that maybe he should be listening to Matt for once.

"M- Matt," Alfred croaked. His throat felt pretty sore now too. "How could you let...?" them take me here? How could you?

Matt stopped at his words for about half a second before he gritted his teeth and willed himself towards his brother, placing his hands on Alfred's shoulders and using his weight to push him down. He didn't care what sort of look he was giving him. He needed to lay down.

How could you let...? This happen? When Alfred had trusted him to have his back? He could have just gotten his twin killed. But Alfred could blame him for this all later, right now he needed to get better. He wasn't going to settle for anything other than his cooperation.

Alfred was surprised to find that Matt's effort was enough to hold him down. Crap. That was bad. He tried to push again but it was no good. Matt wasn't supposed to be stronger than him. Ever. That's not how it was supposed to work!

After another moment of struggling, Alfred gave up and tried to calm his speeding heart. He looked up at Matt and waited for an explanation.

Matt held him fast, also surprised at how he was able to keep his brother at bay. He'd never been stronger than Alfred. It was worrisome. When he finally stopped fighting Matt closed his eyes and sighed through his nose.

When he opened them again they were filled with worry and a hint of regret. "I'm sorry. You were hurt really bad, so we had to take you here," He whispered, as calmly as he could. "You'll be okay, though. You just have to lay down, okay? Please?"

Al would have nodded his head, but when he began to, he realized that the motion sort of hurt. Everything sort of felt sore and sluggish. Correction: his body felt sore and sluggish. His mind was still working well enough. He had questions. Lots of them.

He decided to ask the most important ones first though. He'd worry about... the small stuff later. He swallowed and tried to speak again. "How... did I get hurt?"

...He didn't remember? Matt bit his lip and moved back, easing his grip on his twin. Did he hit his head when he fell? Or ...were there something poisonous about the needles he'd been hit with? Either way this didn't bode well.

"...Do you remember us going into town to fend off a bunch of cactus monsters?"

That did sound sort of familiar. Huh. What had happened next? He remembered shooting at them... and... they were NOT anywhere near as nice as he'd thought they'd be. Oh. He hadn't said that out loud? He guessed not.

No matter. He just looked up and waited for Matt to go on. Spit it out already.

His brother was being so quiet, it was starting to freak him out. He kept calm though, as calm as he could. He knew what that look meant, he just wasn't ready to admit it. He screwed up. He'd taken his eyes off his brother for a moment and that was all the time needed for something like this to happen.

"...I. I'm not exactly sure how it happened- I only took my eyes off you to load my gun! But. But you went down, I tried to get to you as soon as I could- I-" Matt's voice started to crack. It'd really been all his fault.

So... it was that bad? How badly had he been hit? What ha- Oh. Needles. There'd been a lot of them, hadn't there? Alfred gulped and felt his good hand reach out to tug his brother's. He wasn't sure what he wanted to say but... if Matt was crying about it, there must be a reason. Still, he didn't like to see Matt upset. The baby.

Two tugs, as firmly as he could manage, and a loose frown. "Stop it..."

"I'm sorry, Alfred I--AUUGH!!" When his twin pulled on his arm, it sent a needle-wound induced throb through out his upper arm and shoulder. It'd worked, Matt wasn't about to start crying now. At least, not over what happened.

Al let his hand fall away from Matt's with a little jerk. Okay. It looked like it was time for question two. Alfred took a deep breath. It looked like he'd have to try talking again. This was all really annoying. Nothing was working right for him today, not even himself.

"What... happened to you?" Al asked, pushing aside his own problems, Heroically, for Matt's sake.

Matt set his hand over his hurt shoulder and tried to compose himself. That really hurt, he must have been hit harder than he thought. Of course, he barely remembered getting hit, he was too upset at the time, making sure to clear out the damned Cactuar.

He gave Al a reassuring smile and shook his head. "It's nothing bad, I got hit on my shoulder by a few needles, that's all." He leg, too but if Alfred didn't notice that when he tried to hurry over to him, there was no reason to mention it just yet.

Al let that sink in. It was taking his brain longer to process stuff for some reason. ...Those ...people. Penny and Mama. They better not have... like... slipped him something funny while he was passed out. They seemed sweet enough (well, Penny did, anyways) but... you could never really completely trust someone who worked in the medical field.

With his mind working so slow, there was only one word Al could think of saying. "...sorry."
