The door shut behind her, she stood for a few moments watching him sleep. He gave no signs of waking. For Zeetha, this was something that passed for affection. The action made her feel nostalgic, even though she knew she must be careful with an emotion like that.
This boy was much different from her Kolee-dok-Zumil, Agatha Heterodyne. Her Zumil was the only person besides her natural daughters she was able to teach all of her martial secrets and warrior knowledge to. Hana was not going to be trained as a warrior. Hana did not want to be a warrior, and perhaps he did not need to be. There were not hordes of people trying to kill him. And above all, he was a male, and an especially timid one at that.
Yet for all that, there was something fun about the idea of being a teacher again, wasn't there? Surely it could not hurt Hana to learn a few things. That much at least, he seemed to want. And even if he didn't say it, the way he carried himself practically cried out for a little training. It would do him so much good...And a sword left behind by a dead father...that was very sad. Surely the father would have wanted his son to carry his blade in the family name. She could understand the importance of that, the need for that kind of duty to be fulfilled. It was the kind of need that a warrior understood.
She glanced at the blade, sitting on his desk, surrounded by the messy piles of his possessions sprawled about his room. She hadn't been able to find out as much as she had wanted. In fact, she hadn't been able to find out anything at all, but she was unwilling to delay his training any longer. Given what she had learned from the Captain about the bounty hunter who was targeting Vash, and the ship as a whole, and the fact that they would soon be chasing pirates, he couldn't start learning too soon. In fact, it had occurred to Zeetha that running up against the pirates would be a good way to harden up the crew.
She crept closer to the bed, reaching for his little nose. She remembered this part too! The first time she had beeped Agatha's nose. It was the way Skifandrians were used to waking one another up.
She touched her index finger to the tip of his nose, pressing gently. It was time to wake up.
