Tarzan had been up on the mast, watching Brydan from the distance. His natural curiosity made him want to go out and look, but he simply didn't know what he would find, where he would go, and how he would return. He simply didn't know the area and wasn't sure he would have enough time to memorize the area enough to know it well. And so, he sat and watched ( ... )

Wolfina, staring up at the ship, had seen Tarzan's silhouette against the sunlight first as a vague speck leaping between the masts. She squinted, trying to make out what the hell was jumping around up there - a really disoriented bird, or the ship's pet monkey, or--

"WHOA!" She nearly had a heart attack when Tarzan quite suddenly landed right in front of her, seemingly having dropped from the sky-- and then she realized what the thing in the masts had been. He certainly looked strong enough to swing between them that easily.

"Uh," she said, trying to get her breath back and kind of unsure of how to talk to the man crouched on the ground in front of her. "I'm Wolfina." She stuck a hand out for a handshake.

Tarzan blinked at her hand. He'd seen some people on the ship do this. They... shake hands?

He never understood why though. And... there was always something he wanted to do when he had met another one of his kind, but... no one would really stay still.

Of course, neither did he.

He took her hand and, instead of shaking it, he spread their fingers apart, palm to palm. His brows furrowed. "It... is different. But... the same," He said slowly, haltingly. His thoughts were harder to voice in this language. "Everyone different. But the same. Just like Gorilla."

"Is this... how gorillas say hello?" Wolfina asked. She liked this method. It was new, but somehow without the brash formality of a handshake. His hand was much larger than hers and even more callused - but then that was probably to be expected. "It is different."

"No," He shook his head, pulling his hand away. "Gorillas and Humans... not so different. Mother showed me, when I... when I was not..."

What was the word? Tarzan needed to somehow keep track.

"Part of family."

np! sorry about my slow tag, too ^_^;; tripoddlove May 6 2009, 00:47:32 UTC
"Part of whose family?" Wolfina asked. Like him, she wanted to know more. His culture was nearly as alien to her as hers was to him. "I never met a gorilla, so I dunno how different they might be... but I'll take your word for it." She gave him an easy smile, trying to put him at ease.

"Gorilla family," Tarzan cocked his head at her words. "Don't know about humans... don't know how different."

He looked past her to Brydan, he moved past her on all fours, his knuckles supporting him. "This is Brydan?"

"Yep!" Wolfina was able to see the town right over his head, crouched as he was. "Shipbuilding capital of Vohemar." The forests encroached on the edges of the city, visible behind the buildings in the distance. "You said you were planning to build a treehouse in there?"

"Luffy is building treehouse," Tarzan corrected. "I wanted to go to forest. But I have never seen city before."

Finally, he pushed himself up onto his feet. It was a little awkward, but he still stood tall and proud. What was it that the other members had said once? Looks like an ape but walks like a man.

Damn, he was tall when he wasn't crouched like that. Wolfina wasn't short, and she had to look up a good way now to make eye contact. "Well, thanks for coming out here instead," she said. "Besides, I don't know you'd want to build a treehouse out there for the monsters to find. Were there a lot of monsters in the jungle?" If there were, Bydan's forests probably wouldn't be a problem for this guy.

"What are monsters"? Tarzan asked.

There were only animals in the jungle, no monsters. What could Wolfina be talking about? And Tarzan hadn't planned on building a treehouse, just follow Luffy and see what he was building. Maybe he could help? He didn't have any experience though, his parents, his human ones, were the ones that built it before.

[ooc: Am I the only one completely lost on what is going on in TST?]

"You know..." Wolfina fished for an explanation. "They're... kind of like animals, except they... hurt people." She'd grown up fighting them off in Colvus, but she'd never had to explain them to people before. "They're dangerous."

"Why do they hurt people?" Tarzan questioned. "They need food?"

There were plenty of animals in the jungle that were dangerous, so Tarzan was having a hard time understanding the concept of monsters. The dangerous animals usually hunted something else, but that was the way of life. It was what Sabor was doing, before Tarzan killed him.

"I guess..." She considered. Yeah, when they'd attacked back in Colvus, it had always been for food. Her family's farm had been overrun with them in hard times. "Yeah, I guess that's why they do it. They hurt people, though. They're... smarter than animals, a lot of the time. If they managed to get to the food, we wouldn't have had any." It was kind of predatory, she realized with faint surprise. Funny, she'd never thought of it that way before.

"What mean 'smarter than animals'?" Tarzan asked, he didn't understand that at all. He knew all about animals and none were stupid. But then he thought about what she said after. "They steal food? Not hunt?"

Oh, oops. That probably hadn't been the brightest thing to say. Or the best way to phrase it. "Not like that!" she amended hastily, with a sheepish grin to show she'd meant no harm. "I mean... they weren't just doing what they had to do, y'know? They actually wanted to hurt people. I guess the ones who live out where there are no people hunt, but the ones around Colvus were always attacking the farms looking for food."
