Station 7--Reno Beat Jenka electro_phoenix April 6 2009, 03:01:55 UTC
Ah, storms. Not Reno's favorite type of weather to be caught out it, but hey, it was a job.

Suited up in that stupid rubber get up, Reno stood by the net, waiting.

"You two ready, yo?"

The rubber outfit wasn't bad. Jenka was used to assisting in all kinds of bizarre experiments requiring all kinds of bizarre precautions. But most of them had Jäger-fitted equipment, damn it! She glared as she struggled with her hands, impatient to get going. "Almost. Schtupid gloves don't go vell vit claws."

"Oh, hell vit dis!" She pulled harder, and the claws punched through the fingertips. That was better. "Ready."

Beat wriggled his shoulders, trying to adjust the rubber clothing. it stuck to his skin in awkward ways, but he'd deal with it. This was all just too cool to back down from, after all. After that he pulled his airboarding goggles over his eyes, helping to keep the rain from blinding him at the worse possible time.

"Ready, yo!!"

Beat had a good idea. Pulling his own goggles down over his eyes, Reno latched on to part of the net, braced for (hopefully) anything.

"Here's hopin' we don't die!"

Jenka was already enjoying this. Being out in wild weather had been one of her favorite things ever since she first saw a storm. She'd had plenty of occasions for it,even assisted with lightning experiments a few times, but always on the ground. Now, high up above the surface, the wind had all the space in the world to spread, twist, throw itself back at them. She could see the not-so-distant lighting flickering from one cloud to another, without regard for up and down. It was beautiful.

The net was already moving in the wind, but much too close to the deck - the hope was not to have any lighting right above the ship. She grabbed the nearest pulley and started releasing one of the cables holding the net, but with the other cables tight, this only gave it more space to tangle. The wind started twisting the fabric, and Jenka swore as she pulled it back again. This really was going to be difficult.

Beat saw Jenka working on the nets and moved, grabbing a hold of one of the pulleys. They needed to do this in time to have any chance, so he was there, ready to go.

"Yo!! Reno get over here! We gotta be ready!"

"Don't boss me around, kid!" he called, wishing they had rope or something to tie them to the deck with. Reno struggled with the net along with Jenka, swearing as it twisted up. "Hang on!"

It still wasn't easy to keep the thing from twisting out of control, but with the three of them more or less coordinated, it was at least possible. The wind grew stronger, changing direction wildly, tugging on the rope one moment and letting it hang loose the next. It blew Jenka's long hair in all directions until she could barely see - but sight was almost unnecessary. She concentrated on the wind on her skin, the feel of it through the rope in her hands.

The net rose up above the ship, writhing in the storm but staying open, for now. The Jäger let out a loud, exhilarated growl, her instincts coming to the fore as the three of them fought the wind.

Beat didn't bother speaking to try and coordinate their little party in any way or shape. Things were getting too loud to bother really, with the thunder and wind.

Instead he just kept working on the pulley, trying to read the winds by ear, using what he knew from his airboarding to get a feel for the currents, his muscles straining from the pulling net.

Well, at least this wasn't likely to end with them getting jailed. That's what Reno kept telling himself as he forced the net to obey his and Jenka's movements (or at least tried too).

"Any sign of, uh, anything?" he called.

"I can't see much" - Jenka yelled back, grinning manically - "but I'z sure it von't make us vait long!" She pointed to some flashes of lightning off to the west, not quite close enough, but moving closer, and released more of the cable, trying to maneuver the net to meet them.

The flashes of lightning grew closer and closer, until one struck just ahead of them. A bolt of thunder rumbled in the air after the close strike. More lightning began to flash around them, close enough that they could almost reach out to touch it.

"HOLY SHIT!!" Beat bellowed over the thunder, his eyes huge and shocky. It hadn't really hit him how dangerous this was going to be until now... but damn if it wasn't still pretty awesome.

"Can we open up this thin' closer, yo?"

Reno smirked. "Sure, why the hell not?"

Still holding on to the net, he slid around, farther from Jenka, so he could pull the edges of the net further apart. "How's that?"

Now that was what she was waiting for! Jenka raised her face to the rain and lightning, her eyes wide and almost animal-like. She had no thought for the danger, just for the excitement of being out here.

Too entranced by the storm to pay attention to other things, she only remembered their job as Reno moved. Shaking her head, she grabbed a better hold of the rope and jumped in the opposite direction, trying to spread the net more and keep it stable in the increasing wind.

As they worked the net open another blot struck. This time, the net caught it. A crack could be heard, but the net did as it was designed to do, capturing the lightning energy and channeling it back to the main rod on the deck.

Unfortunately, just as the lightning was caught a large gale of wind came up and caught the net, trying to drag it away from its handlers.
