Hibari had just finished instructing (chewing out) one of the hands in the kitchen and sending him off with the dish before turning about, and noting the way Shinjiro Aragaki sat himself down.

"Congratulations?" the pilot wryly put in, with the barest trace of a smile on his lips.

Shinjiro snorted, though there was the tiniest bit of a smile on his lips. A tired smile, but one all the same. "You did pretty good yourself." He replied, resting his chin on his palms and breathing a little heavy.

"Kitchen duty isn't my favorite thing in the world, but you did say you'd help me out in the hangar."

The planes and flying mean a lot to Hibari, but that goes without saying. The pilot leans against the wall, looking off briefly towards the mess hall (crowd; uninteresting) before turning back and tilting his head at Shinji.

"You sound like an old man."

"And I'll keep my word. I don't know shit about planes though."

Shinjiro snorted again, rolling his eyes to the crowd as well and watching his crewmates mulling happily. He would never admit it, but the sight pleased him. Though secretly, he was watching out for someone specific.

"Adrenaline plus no sleep will do that." He wasn't about to bring up his knee. No way in hell.

"If you can use a hammer, wield a blow torch or turn a screw, then you can work on the planes with me."

And that was really all there was to it - most of the damage involved the replacement of armor plates or small adjustments to parts than had been loosened in battle. Slightly more complicated things could be handled by the pilots themselves, and anything beyond that was well out of their jurisdiction.

Hibari decided that he was content to stay where he was. Shinji's company didn't seem like such a bad thing either - something told him that the other man also preferred to be alone, and would therefore be respective of his sense of personal space.

"I can that well enough."

Shinjiro made no attempt to either talk further, or try to get Hibari to leave. He was... comfortable. Comfortable silence was a rare thing on an airship, and he planned to enjoy it.

This was the kind of conversation he liked to carry: succint, simple, and not laden with the need to say anything more than necessary.

"I need to smoke. May I?"

Want to join me?

"Only if you're sharing." Shinjiro countered, smirk-smiling at the other man. He hadn't smoked in almost 6 monthes, and he knew starting up again was a bad idea... but damn he had earned it.

Hibari chuckled - an odd sound, coming from a guy like him - and dug his pack out. He lit up first before offering one to Shinji.

"So what were you up to during the raid? Something tells me that you weren't just cooking," he murmurs, as he turns on the vent.

Shinjiro took the rolled tobacco with just a tiny bit of eagerness, nodding at the chuckle. A quick rummage in his coat procured him a match, and soon the familiar smell of tobacco smoke was in the air.

"I ran a cannon, for awhile."

"So you can fight. I figured."

Now the cook(?) had become just a little more interesting. Hibari was also reminded why he had chosen the Silvana over all of the others, mishaps aside: not a single crew member appeared to be helpless.

"Damn straight. Can't get anywhere in Kropmork if you can't."

Maybe there was a tinge of pride in his voice... though he wasn't going to bring up all the training against Shadows that had turned him from a brawling punk into a practiced melee fighter.

"Kropmork, huh..."

It wasn't an entirely surprising coincidence - the streets of his home city were crawling with all sorts of types, and a good number of them were young, lost and violent.

"I grew up there myself."

"Then you were there longer. Just a few years for me." He shrugged, drawing deep on the smoke and letting it out again in a long stream.

"Hard place, Kropmork. It's is what it is."

Hibari didn't answer - he didn't have any other point of comparison, and it didn't really matter to him. He wasn't going to let any place defeat him, no matter how 'hard' it was.

The mess hall was starting to fill up; the pilot could hear the noise of their conversation floating in from the kitchen. He'd go after he finished his cigarette, he decided. He'd rather eat fast and head back to the planes as soon as possible than linger for too long.
