This all felt rather surreal. In all her life she had never been caught. Even before she started pirating and lived the life of a thief or mercenary, she had always somehow managed to get free. Certainly she'd been in rough spots before, but nothing amounted to this.

She doubted anything ever would.

Still, if someone were to look upon Winry they would notice nothing wrong. Perhaps she was a bit quieter than usual, but she managed to maintain a calm exterior, and she was certain much of this was thanks to the talk she and Naoto had had while on their way to Berum.

It had been years since she had let out on someone like that, and it had done her a world of good.

She wasn't stupid or naive; Winry still understood how dire the situation was, but she still believed they could make it out of this, and she would do everything in her power to ensure that.

The silence between himself and his fellow inmates was almost deafening. Kambei was far too quiet as he stood against the wall with his eyes closed, almost as if he was trying to meditate while being locked here within this prison. The others within his cell wore their anguish upon their faces but with the samurai, his anguish could be deciphered by his silence. If he could say a few encouraging words or two to the fellow members of crew, Kambei would have if he thought it would do them some good.

However, considering the uncertainty of their fate...it would be pointless to do so. He was sure that they all were aware of the fact they could be possibly trialed and hung for a heinous crime none of them committed, so what point would it do for him to pretend as if all shall be well?

"Hm...?" Opening his eyes slightly once he heard a guard pass by, Kambei glanced towards the steel bars of their cell with mild interest.

Damn, had it been a long time since Maxim had been in a prison. A really long time. He really needed to start getting into more trouble or he'd destroy his reputation.

Quite honestly, he could probably figure out how to break himself out if he really tried, but he knew that the best thing to do was submit quietly until he was given orders otherwise... as much as he wanted to rip through some throats with his bare claws.

"Zo... who vants to hear a joke?"

They had taken the tripod.

They had taken. The tripod.

Wolfina had had it under one arm when they'd frogmarched her off the ship, hoping these would treat it as an innocuous tripod like every other branch of authority tended to, but no, they'd taken it off her right before they threw her into the cell, chucking it on the pile of weapons taken off the other crewmembers and then shutting the door in her face.

She stood by the door, arms folded, murder on every feature. "Bastards," she growled at no one. "Damn militaristic bastards think they can just come and throw a whole damn ship in prison without a fair trial - this isn't justice!" She turned and bellowed out the door, "This isn't justice!", to make sure the guards were aware of her opinion, and turned back to the cold cell, glare even deeper.

Since she was standing right before the bars, Winry caught the guard's eyes as he passed by ( ... )

The samurai was honestly interested in the mild-mannered joke that Maxim wanted to share, figuring it would be better to hear a joke or two rather for them all to stay so quiet. However once Wolfina let out a fearsome growl, his interests shifted from the Jager and over towards the livid woman who muttering idly about injustice. This was perhaps one of the few times that Kambei could honestly remember being in a room with Wolfina, rather shameful isn't it? He honestly did not take the time before to meet some of the new recruits the 4423 picked up during their missions but Kambei could sympathize with her grief regardless of that fact.

"A joke would be welcomed..." He spoke to Maxim hoping that maybe a jovial joke could cheer them all up, especially Wolfina who seemed to be most troubled out of the three.

Excited that he'd garnered some interest with his offer to cheer everyone up, Maxim shifted his weight so that he was sitting with one knee up, his elbow rested on it.

"Hokay, zo dere's dis ship on a lake, right? Und de captain has a parrot. Und dere's a magician on de ship vot entertains de passengers. Vell, de magician iz alvays doink dese magic tricks dot make tings disappear. Only de parrot iz vatching all de time und soon learns how he does it, so chust to be mean it kips spoilink de trick by tellink efferyvun 'Iz in his sleeve'!"

"Vell, vun day dere is a storm und de ship sinks. Efferyvun bot de parrot und de magician dies. Dey sit on a vooden plank und shtare at each odder for three days. Finally, de parrot breaks de silence und goes, 'Hokay, Hy gives op, vot did hyu do vit de ship?'"

After giving the punchline Maxim broke into laughter at his own joke, slapping his knee and leaning back against the wall. It was an honest attempt to lift morale a bit, but he ended up entertaining himself in the process.

No, jokes were really not going to work right now. Wolfina was furious, but more than that she was helpless. There was nothing she hated more, and the very air of the cell was chafing against her skin.

She clenched a fist, giving herself something to focus on, and forced herself to think rationally. Her cellmates wouldn't benefit from a temper tantrum, and the more time spent thinking about the injustice of it all, the less time spent thinking of a way out. "Sorry," she said, partly to Winry and partly to all of them. "And Maxim..." She managed a hint of her old grin. "I've heard that one before."

Winry let out a small choked sound that was her attempted at preventing a mirthful snort. Honestly, what she found more humorous was Maxim's reaction to it. Perhaps the joke had gone over her head, but just seeing the Jager laughing up a storm raised her spirits a little.

Corny as it made seem, the laughter of others had always been good medicine for her.

When it came down to it, at this moment there really wasn't much that could be done; spending the waiting game in such strained silence was doing more bad than good, so she was really appreciative. Jagers always seemed to pull through in tough times.

The old samurai's light chuckle was muted by Maxim's boisterous laughter. The joke the punch line was rather amusing despite the joke being rather dull. He found the others mirth to be more rewarding than the joke, especially now that the four of them did not seem as tense as before. However, it would take more than one joke to put a smile upon any of their faces now. Kambei still have yet to figure out a best course of action, he knew he could probably handle a few guards on his own but without his sword...it be close to impossible to free the others ( ... )

Even the tiny bit of laughter his joke produced was enough to satisfy Maxim. He hated that everyone was getting so upset by their predicament and wished he could force some of his calm onto them, but he supposed this was the best he could do ( ... )

"I'd say we should find a way to spring ourselves out," Wolfina said, "But we could never get everyone else out before they got up enough reinforcements to put us down. And I sure as hell wouldn't want to leave anyone here." She thought longingly of her tripod - what a hole it could put in the wall to the next cell! - but quickly dismissed the thought. That was useless right now.

"Me, I want facts," she said. "What happened in Doma wasn't our fault. So who was it and why'd we get framed?"

Winry was a little wary as well. The reason they had agreed to come to Berum at all was because they knew how microscopic the chances of them avoided both Vohemar AND Ivona were. Really, when it had come down to it, if they had gone down that path they would have had to leave Reial altogether and hope to find some uncharted island.

Leave Reial, continue on past the familiar skies they had always known. It was possibility, but one that made Winry so much more frightened and sadder than the one that sat before them now. For all they knew there could be no islands beyond this one, or at least, no other inhabited ones.

"Why not? Ivona already hates us specifically, so chances are it'd be easier to convince them to let us take the fall, regardless of whether we were responsible or not. I'd like to know who it was as well...finding the true culprits is the greatest respect we could pay those people."

Kambei knew it was foolish of him to try and plot of a way help the crew escape from here but he honestly doesn't think they stand a chance here in Berum. Even if they do claim that they are innocent, the general public already views the crew of the 4423 as villains regardless. The ship's rise to fame started when the Captain Isako and her men evaded the deadly clutches of Admiral von Karma's Victoria II. Since then, the 4423 has been having more than enough problems trying to keep itself intact and it's crew alive. This sudden streak of bad luck began as right after the assassination during the peace conference between them and the crew of the Victoria II. Heihachi told Kambei what happened during that conference and none of it ever made any ounce of sense to the old samurai.

"You are right, Maxim." Kambei replied finally after weighing out their options here. If they tried to escape now, that would only backfire against them and it seem as if the 4423's crew is guilty for poisoning Doma. However if they stayed here, the samurai ( ... )

"Ve gots framed becoz ve vos in de neighborhood at de time und ve iz easy to frame becoz ve iz pirates. Pipple vill take any excuse to hate us, if dey doesn't already." Maxim knew a lot about being hated for such reasons. He'd spent the past two hundred years of his life being hated by most of Reial. Of course, it had been well worth it. Joining the Jägermonsters was the best thing Maxim had ever done for himself.

Even though he couldn't quite understand the panic and despair that seemed to be running rampant among his crewmates, Maxim was still trying his best not to be insensitive about the things he said. Though sometimes "trying his best" didn't always keep him from saying stupid things.

He glanced around at his cell mates with a wide grin. "So... who vants to play twenty qvestions?"
