Anthy stood in the park and looked out into the night. It should have been darker, but a low line of light made a ring around the horizon. Lights were on everywhere, the streets had been full of people. Passing them, she had hardly paid any attention, following an invisible path as if it had been laid out for her. It had simply been like strolling down a broad avenue, and despite the twists and turns of the sidewalks, the throngs of people crowding them, the way had seemed perfectly straight and wide. Her head had felt light, and as her feet made contact with the ground they had felt strange, as if the ground were rising up to meet them, hitting them at funny angles.
But there was something that she needed here. That was why it had been easy to find. Things were not in equilibrium inside her, she could feel her magic fluctuating. Loops of energy seemed to bloom out of her chest, unstable fields rising and falling, collapsing and reawakening, bleeding out into the ground and air. By the end of her journey the magic had taken a visible form, at the bottom of her vision she could see flashes of white and coral light that flared from her chest. The pain had ceased to matter a long time ago, floating, she felt little connection to her body.
None of that mattered now. The memory of leaving Shinji's room, leaving the ship seemed very vague, something from a decade previous. It was hard to feel a connection. The most important thing now was the magic, which was streaming from the ground and air. It flowed more freely here, moving in thick currents, and that is why she had come. The way water wants to go down hill, her magic had wanted to come here.
It was time to rest and let go.
She could feel the energy moving everywhere now, far outside her body. The plants seemed to breathe it, and she could feel the way it moved through them, easy for her to drink in and pull. At long last she begin to be able to stabilize herself, drawing in more and more, changing things inside herself, anchoring herself down to the ground, integrating her body in to the greater web around her. The sensation had passed far beyond pain, it was simply pressure and color. At last she was holding the magical lines inside her body steady and she could feel, like a scar, the place where the sword had been spelled inside her.
That was the nexus. As the last link snapped into place there was the slightest pause, and then the magic inside her body began to unfold around that ring of magical scarring. There was a flash of white light, and then her body seemed to dissolve into nothingness.
