How many holes were there in the ship's hull, anyway? They didn't seem to end. Dimo shook his head as he rolled up his sleeves, determined to make short work of this one. He'd sealed five smaller holes this week alone, and there were doubtless many more to go. He didn't tire easily, thank God, but still, he did get bored after doing the same thing for most of the afternoon. This one had a bit more to go before it would be quite finished.

Winry had more or less been visiting every spot of the ship--exceptions being only private rooms. She'd rather not intrude on a person and start off on a bad foot. She hadn't really met many people till the sound of Dimo's hammering and repairing fell upon her ears. She walked over to the side of the ship and looked down. It was a little hard to see him at first because of how the ship was angled, but she leaned over a bit and caught sight of...

A Jager. There was Mamma and Maxim, so if her memory was correct the other Jager onboard was one called Dimo. She leaned on the side of the boat, folding her arms and couldn't help but grin a bit. He seemed so earnest in his work, so she just watched for a bit, tucking her chin in her palm.

Almost there. With a final swing of the hammer, Dimo nailed the new wood into place and sealed the hole, satisfied with the amount of caulk that he had used to fill in the gap between the new board and the existing hull. Only three more to go for the afternoon, but they were on the other side of the ship ( ... )

Winry returned the wave with a small one of her own. She watched as he scaled the ship and stood back to give him some space as he climbed over.

She took his hand and shook it before hooking her thumbs on the straps of her pants. She leaned back, admittedly a little surprised by the polite introduction. Most of her crew were a fairly friendly bunch, but few exhibited such courtesy. What could be expected though? They were pirates. Winry herself didn't exactly possess what you would call proper protocol.

At least not when she was being herself; growing up in Ivona had taught her what she needed if she ever wanted to fool someone.

"Mmm. Not quite new," she said with a small chuckle, "I'm Winry."

So this was the first mate! Dimo had wondered when he would have the opportunity to meet her. Now that she was right here in front of him, however, he had to admit that she wasn't quite what he'd expected. Given that she had worked for Mamma Gkika, even briefly, he'd been picturing someone...taller? Older? No matter. It wasn't like he wasn't used to having most of his friends and associates be much, much younger than he was.

Dimo spread his arms to either side and stretched his shoulders first one way, then the other. The stitches on his left upper arm showed plainly as he did so, and with a much more relaxed and friendly smile, he replied, "Ah, Miss Vinry! Mamma Gkika haz told me a little about hyu. I tink she said hyu used to vork for her, yez?"

"I did!" Reial was a small, small place. Even if they were all Jagers, it was still surprising to realize that he seemed to be an acquaintance of Mamma as well.

"Back at her bar, when I was about twelve or so." Her face became a little distant as she recalled those fond memories. Passing off as a Jager had certainly been no easy task for her. Particularly since at the time she had been even teenier than she was now, and well honestly, pretty figureless.

Her temperament seemed quite suited for the role, though, and after a couple fights no one seemed to doubt her.

"You a friend of hers?"

Dimo chuckled. "Vell, hyu could zay dot. She's been my General zince I became a Jager. Ve know each odder better den most people do." And know all of the right buttons to push to get the other to do what you want them to. He was pretty certain that he knew his friends well, but if he was a student of human nature, then Mamma Gkika was the undisputed Mistress of that in his mind. "Iz zometimes scary how vell ve know each odder."

Raising an eyebrow, he leaned back on one arm against the railing. "Hyu vas only tvelve vhen hyu schatrted dere? She's taking dem young lately, eh? But hey, iz vun of de safest places for a young lady to be vorking. Mamma takes goot care of her gorls." Glancing from side to side at the ship, he inquired, "Zo, how long haz hyu been vorking on de 4423?"

Became a Jager? Winry tilted her head at that--she hadn't been aware that Jagers were made. She wanted to ask about that but she wasn't sure if it might be a touchy question.

Much of Mamma was still a mystery to her, but when she thought about it, Mamma probably knew more about her than anyone else on this ship. With the possible exception of Ling, if you counted him as part of the ship.

"Yea. It was more of a favor for me, I was alone in the Badlands, just out of Ivona so I wasn't really in the best of sorts. She saved me, really." She'd been stealing and generally just doing anything to survive back then.

Winry leaned against the ship's railing "Wow...almost as long as the Captain...almost a year and a half?" she couldn't even remember exactly when she'd met Isako.

Dimo caught the slight movement of Winry's head in response to his statement and smiled broadly, showing off a hint of sharp, yellowed teeth. For one reason or another, people not familiar with Jägers were a natural race. He would pity the mother, if that had been the case. Even a Jäger female would be no match for a Jäger toddler.

"Only a year und a half? Und here I vas, feeling like de odd vun out for being de new fellow! Hyu iz all schtill pretty new to de ship den, yez?" He looked her up and down with interest. She couldn't be older than 18, he thought. Were things still as hard as they'd been when he was a child? "It vas goot of Mamma to do dot for hyu," he murmured. Getting right to one of the subjects that had been on his mind recently, he asked, "How hard of a taskmaster iz hyu? Und vhat iz my job here, exactly? Zo far, I only zeem to move heavy tings. Not," he added hastily, "dot I iz complaining."

"Yea. The 4423 is still just a baby." she said, patting the ship fondly. Just a baby and yet it had seen so much. Since she was here from practically the start Winry had seen people come and go. Some had left on their own, some had died, and some had been given the boot. They'd done many raids, been in battles, and for some reason or other been pinned as the representatives of Vohemar. Well, it was because of that battle they had had against the Victoria, she supposed, but the irony of her being the First Mate of 'Vohemar's' ship when she was Ivonian never failed to amuse her ( ... )

"Vell," Dimo started, pondering how to put his thoughts into words without seeming overly eager, "Dere's been a lot of free time for me lately. Und dot's not bad, but if I iz being paid, I should be doing more. I pick tings up qvick, und I do like to do schtuff vhat lets me use my brain as vell as my body. If dere's zometing dot needs doing, I vould be glad for de vork, even if iz just more odd jobs around de ship."

Hmmm. Winry pondered for a while. There was probably plenty that could be done around the ship, she couldn't think of anything off the top of her head, but she'd take a look at the records and ask to see if anyone needed a helping hand.

"I'll see what I can find for ya then. I'll contact you once I get something--but one thing that's always welcome is finding small jobs. Nothing like the one we recently did--something that big is a first but things that groups of us can do quickly and easily is good. Small things like hunts and whatnot."

"Zounds goot! Und thenks," Dimo replied sincerely. "I iz schtill learning de chain of command around here, und not everyvun's around all de time, zo I iz lucky to recognize half of de officers."

Winry nodded, after all, she herself had been absent for quite a bit, and Isako was usually kept pretty busy. Getting to them could be hard at times, but she did her best.

"Not a problem. And if you ever need anything else don't hesitate to give me a holler! You have any particular sort of preference in what jobs you do? Anything you really like?"
