Heihachi was relieved to see Jushirou and his twin blades, though even if he summoned the creatures that lived inside them would they be able to stand up to the dragon? It was huge. Bigger even than the version Toshirou had summoned in the Badlands, and that one had been fearsome enough. This one could coil around the ship with length to spare, and didn't seem to have any direction - only mindless rage.
He pulled down his goggles to protect his eyes from the cutting wind, but the cold was much more intense than before, seeping right into his bones and stealing his breath. He could see that something was happening to Toshirou, the ice consuming his body, but how could anyone even get close to him like this? He was starting to doubt that even Jushirou was strong enough. The man had seemed so frail the first time Heihachi had visited, and the mechanic was already struggling not to flinch under the heavy pressure of magical energy spilling across the deck.
When the dragon turned in their direction, however, Heihachi decided that they were probably really screwed. He had his sword, but he doubted it would do a damn thing. The only other crew members on deck were the Doctor and...a dog? He was starting to wish for a little more firepower, but while he didn't think hurting the dragon would hurt Toshirou it wouldn't be easy to keep the boy out of the crossfire.
The sharp decrease in temperature was not the only indication that Hitsugaya was the cause of this. Ice had begun to form across the floors and walls, designing rooms as ice coffins. Catching the unmistakable roar of a dragon from somewhere in the proximity of the top deck, she wasted no time in heading there. After such a long search through the Montague, she was more than jaded, but it was something she could deal with, hopefully. Regardless, she couldn't simply stand there and idle away.
Pushing the door open, the deck, coated with a thick layer of ice, was immediately presented into view, along with the mist that lightly obscured the air. It was far colder on the exterior than within, with the sting of the wind biting at her skin until it felt unbearably numb. Several others were already there - Jushirou, Heihachi, the dog, and the doctor. Hitsugaya's outline could vaguely be seen, and it seemed as if was upon his hands and knees, literally half-frozen. Hovering above the ground was a dragon, who was undoubtedly Hitsugaya's spirit that was currently beginning to head towards Jushirou.
Similarly to what had happened within her quarters, she knew she had to provide assistance in one way or another. It was clear she could not approach the helmsman, while the dragon would probably take a great deal to mollify. Would her hymn work again? Did she even have enough strength left to complete it? In spite of all negative factors, it was worth a shot.
Shutting her eyes - as much as she hated to tear her gaze away from the approaching danger - to concentrate on the lyrics, she parted her lips, letting the foreign words of her song flow from her tongue. This time, she had imbued a fonic arte into the melody. If it worked successfully, it would put the dragon to rest. If that failed and it did not even manage to calm it...well, she'd ponder about it when the time came. For now, she needed her full attention on her song. Although, if anything, with the condition she was in after the Montague mission, she wasn't even certain if she'd be able to finish the entire hymn...
Ikkaku, holding up his hands in front of his face to shield away the bitter ice and horrible winds kicked up by the roaring fury of Hyorinmaru, fought his way out of the deck's main doorway from the ship, trudging slowly against the unyielding spiritual energy it exuded. He stared angrily up at it as it circled above, drawing strength from the cold of this, a very mountainous region. As he left the interior of the ship, he joined his comrades quickly, drawing out Hozukimaru from its blue-lacquered sheath; the polished steel sang sweetly as it was pulled free, and with a deft flick of his wrist, Ikkaku wielded it menacingly in a fierce and readied position.
Seeing Jushirou having to summon up a considerable amount of power was a little more encouraging; for a minute, Ikkaku was afraid to think that he was the only one having to fight a little against the reiatsu's current. "Ehh-ehh, Jushirou-kun. Isn't this your little pupil here that's going nuts?" he asked, chiding the quartermaster a little. "I thought you were gonna teach him a thing or two."
With a loud SNAP, Ikkaku shoved the end of his sword's hilt together with the open end of its scabbard. "Oi!" he suddenly yelled out, trying to shout over the sound of the icy wyrm towards some of the other crew members, the ones who may have already sensed themselves as being overpowered. "If you think you're gonna get in the way here, you're probably right! Step back and let us handle this!"
The combined surfaces of his weaponry suddenly began to glow, emitting the same ethereal sense of power and authority as Jushirou's had. Ikkaku chuckled a little as he eyed his opponent, his eyes narrowed as he sucked in a deep breath, only to use it to cry out, "GROW, Hozukimaru!"
While it lacked the same depth as Jushirou's command, the presence of his weapon, now taking the form of a long and threatening naginata, was just as worthy of attention. Ikkaku grasped the smooth wax-wood shaft in both of his hands, one in front of the other for balance and support, and pointed the sharp, bladed tip up at the dragon.
"Hang back for a second, and I'll get his attention!" he roared, only to take a sudden, blindingly-fast leap at Hyorinmaru. He reared back his weapon, then took a quick, sharp swipe at it with all of his bone-crushing strength.
Hyorinmaru changed course at the last possible minute, growling as he felt the Quincy drawing energy from him. Wings beating at the air the dragon threw back it's head let loose a earsplittling shriek of pure rage. Then it heard that song from before and turned it's attention towards Tear with a hiss. That song had calmed it before, now all it did was serve to anger it further. It would not be caged a second time.
Toshirou hugged himself as the ice continued to gather around him until the wings were completely formed spanning a good ten feet across from tip to tip. The ice that had formed down his back turned into a tail that coiled around him as he kneeled on the ground. He could feel his Zanpakuto's rage, and hate, it smothered everything making it hard to breathe.
Hyorinmaru whipped his head around and snapped at the thing that had just struck him. It had actually hurt.
Jushirou found himself more confident in current company. Even if he failed...it was possible that Hyorinmaru could be overpowered and subdued once more. But it would take a lot of effort, and there was a strong possibility one or more of them would be incapacitated. A necessary risk, Jushirou thought to himself as he readied a massive ball of lightning energy.
If they failed here, the entire ship would collapse in the weight of the cold. People would be killed...and he couldn't let Toshirou have that sort of catastrophe on his conscious.
As Hyorinmaru attempted to counter Ikkaku's attack, Jushirou let the energy fly towards the dragon, the electrical currents whipping at the frozen skin of the beast. The Dog, Isshin, and Tear on support...himself, Ikkaku, and Heihachi on the attack...their chances seemed good.
"Don't worry Toshirou...we won't let you or this ship fall..."
Between the Quincy drawing his energy and the others with Zanpakuto spirit's fighting him as well, Hyorinmaru could see that the fight wasn't going his way. Wounded the dragon roared again, whirling in the air to settle by his master. His tail coiled protectively around Toshirou as Hyorinmaru glared at everyone.
Toshirou looked up at Hyorinmaru, he knew Ichimaru's words were true. The raging, out of control dragon was merely a reflection of his soul, he just hadn't wanted to admit it. He bowed his head as Hyorinmaru tightened it's coils then with crack as loud as thunder, the dragon shattered.
Raising his Zanpakuto in his hand, Toshirou pointed the blade at Jushirou. Attacking his friend was going to break his heart even more, but it was the only way he could get the older man to stop him. Or if Jushirou couldn't strike, he was certain Ikkaku wouldn't hold back.
"Daiguren Hyorinmaru." The young man said in the sudden silence.
Was the boy truly going to attack? The fool. Did he have a death wish?
Ryuuken paused.
Perhaps the boy's thoughts were not so far from that.
He frowned, and redoubled his energy collection. The boy had a remarkable amount of energy for one so young (of course he did; if he did not, they would not be in this situation), but Ryuuken continued to draw and release the energy into the atmosphere above. He would not take enough to kill the boy, but instead weaken him as much as possible.
He would not use his bow unless it became absolutely necessary.
The Dog growled, abandoning the attempt at a magical attack and going for a more physical approach. The fur on her back bristled as she moved in to the attack, her body growing larger as she bounded forwards to confront the dragon - only to halt herself as the dragon shattered and scattered away.
Snarling, hackles raised, she looked around warily, tensed and ready to spring should the beast reappear. Even at the size she'd reached, however, formidable as it was - she was now larger and more ferocious-looking than almost any natural dog - she knew she was still no match for the dragon. If it did return, the most she could do would probably be to distract it while someone else took it out.
Her gaze focused on Hitsugaya as the boy spoke, his words ringing ominously across the deck. She didn't want to have to attack the kid, but it looked like she might have to. At least he should be easier to immobilize than his dragon, if it was going to come to that. As it looked like it might.
Heihachi stared in disbelief as Toshirou raised his sword. He wouldn't...but there was a fierce determination in Toshirou's expression that clearly said he would, and an even more disturbing lucidity that said it wasn't wild rage that drove him. Toshirou knew exactly what he was doing.
"Idiot," he hissed, drawing his own sword. Ice nearly froze it to the sheath, but a sharp yank pulled it free, though he made a note to be careful with it. In this temperature, there was a good chance the blade might shatter.
He would have felt much better with Kambei or Gorobei beside him, but in lieu of that, the crew of the Silvana would have to do. He hoped Jushirou and Madarame were skilled enough to take Toshirou down without hurting him too badly. Heihachi was going to avoid crossing swords with the boy if possible, unless he saw a good opening to strike without drawing blood.
It looked like everyone was to hesitant to attack him, well he couldn't just stand there and let Ryuuken slowly drain him of energy until he was to weak to fight before anyone made a move to stop him. Narrowing his eyes, he kept his blade leveled in Jushirou's direction as his wings fully unfurled from his sides.
With a silent command he released Hyorinmaru from his blade as he cut the air in a flat arc before flying straight at his friend, and mentor. The ice dragon shot out from the sword roaring as it slammed into the ship, ice and water covering the deck hopefully distracting everyone else as the young man moved to attack Jushirou.
Toshirou's blade was met by both of Jushirou's own, a spark flying from the force of the impact, but quickly died within the intense cold around them. Jushirou's expression was deadly serious. He knew exactly what Toshirou was doing, no matter how foolish he though it to be. But...it was perhaps the only way to show Hyorinmaru how serious he was. It was time to test Toshirou's training in a way the older man never wanted to...at the point of death would true understanding be reached.
He countered Toshirou's attack with expert grace and strength. Jushirou was one of the greatest swordsmen in all of Reial. There were little to none who could best him. He just hoped he would not have to use the full extent of that skill...
Gritting his teeth at the force of the impact, Toshirou doubled the energy he was putting into his attacks. He was going to push his friend as much as he could, he didn't want Jushirou to hold back. The young man might not have the older man's skill but he was a quick learner.
His eyes flashed as they locked blades for a brief moment before breaking away. Callilng on Hyorinmaru again, Toshirou swung his blade around sending the ice dragon straight at his mentor. One way or another he was going get someone to stop him. Whether that person was Jushirou, Ikkaku or one of the other people standing nearby it didn't matter.
Shuddering violently, the deck of the ship shuddered as the massive dragon of ice repeatedly slammed against it; the Silvana, a proud warship with plenty of power to spare, had no choice but to tip and rock around for a moment until it was able to stabilize its flight path once again, and this meant everyone on the open deck would be tossed around on a thin coating of ice.
Ikkaku had set himself up try and get another passing swipe in, but once the ship began to tilt, he slipped, fell onto his rear, and immediately began to slide along the slick, iced surface until he slammed into the railing on the very edge of the deck. He grunted, then caught a grip on the rail before he could be thrown straight over the end.
"Jushirou! He's gonna bring the whole ship down!" Ikkaku shouted over the noise and confusion, trying to emphasize that if Toshirou wasn't stopped, they'd likely all...be killed.
Once he was on his feet again, Ikkaku steadied himself, then launched forward in a startling burst of speed. He practically disappeared, visible again several yards closer to Toshirou, and just as quickly, he was gone again, remerging even closer. Ikkaku was zig-zagging across the length of the deck at lighting-speed, never staying in one spot for more than a split second.
Suddenly, he was right beside Toshirou as the master of the ice dragon brought it swinging towards Jushirou. Ikkaku raised up his weapon, holding the naginata with a firm grip in both hands. Toshirou's neck was open and exposed; all he had to do was drive the bladed tip straight through, and the Silvana, as well as its crew, would be safe.
Che, this is gonna come back to bite me one day, I know it...
Sneering, Ikkaku instead swung it down towards Toshirou's hands, right at the point where he held his sword.
It had happened so suddenly. One second the dragon had shot into the deck, and the next, the entire ship had lurched violently, as if it were a thrashing snow globe. Almost instantly, Tear could feel her body harsly careen downwards, following the stagger of the Silvana. A pricking sensation crisply stung her skin, the pain of the collision magnified by the fresh coat of ice completely covering the ground. Exhaling sharply, her breath emerging visibly in the cold, her eyes shut for a few moments, her hands clenched tightly into fists.
However, before she could even start mulling over her next action, the Silvana had begun tilting once more, and she had found herself slide onto the edge of the deck. Instinctively reaching up, she hastily seized the railing with her right hand, using it to help pull herself up. The metal was slick with frozen water, sending addition shivers of cold running down her spine. Swallowing thickly, she brought her gaze over to where Hitsugaya was contending against the others.
If her hymn would not work, then the only option left was to fight. She had hoped there was an alternate method, but her mind was at a loss as to how. Briefly glancing at the damage the ship had been delivered, she mentally noted to prepare usage of a different hymn later if it was required.
With one hand firmly gripping the railing to steady herself, she shifted, her free arm jerking back to withdraw her hidden knife. Keeping her eyes deepply fixated to the battle as it had progressed, she waited for the right opportunity to strike. A warm sensation flew from her fingers as she began to imbue her fonic artes into her weapon, continuing to watch until, at last, the opportunity had arrived.
Hitsugaya had sent his dragon shooting towards Jushirou, while Ikkaku had appeared by his side, preparing to bring his weapon towards the boy.
Swiftly twisting her knife, she then shot it forward, aiming it precisely towards the very edge of Hitsugaya's left shoulder. It was intentionally angled downward for two reasons. One, if the helmsman had decided to move away from Ikkaku's strike, he would find himself in the path of her weapon. And, two, if he had decided to remain immobile or managed to evade it, then the knife would pierce the floor, causing a fonic glyph to spread that would sear anything or anyone within its proximity. In this case, that would be Hitsugaya.
Toshirou caught Ikkaku's movement out of the corner of his eye. Finally someone was going to try and stop him. However at the last second even the bald guy held back and swung his sword down towards his hands.
With a disgusted sound, the young man brought one of his ice wings up blocking the attack as best as he could. Unfortunately the movement put him right in the path of Tear's blade.
Searing pain shot through his left shoulder and he cried out falling to one knee. Wings instictively wrapped around him to form a small shield. Gasping trying to gather his energy, Toshirou struggled to his feet. If he wanted people to stop him, it looked like he'd have to go all out. He couldn't hold anything back.
"That's enough!" Jushirou shouted, using an electrified blade to cut through the dragon that flew towards him. The pain still came, of course, as the intense cold rushed bast him. But he had to ignore it, he had to push on. He made a few more steps, his arms heave with ice, and prepared what he hoped would be the attack needed to finally put an end to this.
Ikkaku and Tear were two close...it was obvious what Toshirou wanted. He wanted Jushirou to finish him...he truly believed that was the only way to stop it. And...
No!
He couldn't do that! There was always another option! And he knew just what. With a whispered casting, he crossed the blades of Sogyo no Kotowari in front of him. From them a great swirling serge of water formed and was launched at all three of them with enough pressure to take them off their feat. He would apologize later...but no one would die this day! He couldn't allow it!
He pulled down his goggles to protect his eyes from the cutting wind, but the cold was much more intense than before, seeping right into his bones and stealing his breath.
