The room had started to become a little stifling. Cabin Fever; it was something Matilda had never experienced before. She had spent many years keeping to her own room at the Academy, studying, and it had never been much of a problem then. She supposed getting to know some of the other members of the Victoria II a little more, becoming accustomed to the air, and interaction on regular basis was already taking it's toll on her. It was a surprisingly quick process, but one she was actually glad for. She felt better than she had in a long time, more energetic. Her thirst for socialization if anything also heightened her thirst for knowledge. She had tackled Edgeworth's project with more and more energy every day and had finished it just in time.
It had been a fascinating experiment. Matilda hadn't been aware of how little she had known about Reial's history, and how little there was yet to be found out. It had inspired hundreds of questions for her, all which she was so eager to talk to someone about. She had posted a couple publicly over the network but had resisted being hasty and pestering strangers with all of them.
Better to find someone on board who would be interested in speaking with her. These things were better face to face, after all. She walked around the ship, a little puzzled to how empty it seemed to be till her feet carried her up to the deck. She was surprised to see that they had were docked. Well it really went to show how immersed she gotten in her studies. She hadn't even been paying attention to the network, other than posting her questions, otherwise she would have known. A careful study of what she could see of the city from here told her it was most likely Melior. She had only been here once before.
The young girl hesitated for a moment, wondering if she was allowed to leave the ship before she gave a small shrug and made her way to the pier. It would be no biggie, right? They probably wouldn't even notice she was gone. She'd just go to one of their libraries for a couple hours to read, and return with little hubbub.
Matilda couldn't remember much of her last time in Melior, but she did remember thinking it was beautiful and now she saw why. It was an intricate tapestry. Buildings rose high, each vying to be the tallest and most magnificent. Banners, crests, colors were everywhere, showing the truth depth and bredth of Ivona's wealth and culture. She smiled as she passed over a bridge, stopping to admire another airship which slowly flew above her. She was incased in its shadow before it left completely. She turned to watch it go, and in doing so caught sight of what was below her.
She went over to the edge of the bridge, and was overcome with an unsettling feeling. Just as what she had seen of Melior so far was bright and beautiful, what was below here was dark and ugly. The streets were dirty and houses tiny hovels. There weren't many people that she could see, but the few didn't look very healthy.
"What...is this?" It seemed so completely out of place. Like two different worlds had been stacked upon one another, and before she could even think Matilda's feet were moving on her own, taking across the bridge and down, down, down to the lower depths of Melior.
