For the first time in hours, Jade breathed a sigh of relief - relief that all the patients were tended to, that no one had died, that the damn zombies were gone. Not for the first time, he made a note to petition the captain for more medical personnel. Miyo was a great help, of course, and that young woman passenger had been vital in many ways, but it was ridiculous to rely on passengers for aid.
Jade stretched his back out and made his way over to one of the sinks, dumping his soiled gloves into a sterilized waste bin along the way. He scrubbed his hands thoroughly and leaned down to splash some cool water on his face.
At that moment, however, something knocked into the back of his knee with the force of a casual sledgehammer and nearly pitched forward, knocking excessive amounts of water into himself. Coughing slightly, Jade whipped around, fully prepared to rip apart whomever had slammed into him.
He was met by empty space. Mildly baffled, Jade looked down to his feet where a quiet (and oddly familiar, his brain said, but he chose to ignore it) snorting sound was bubbling up. He met the eternally-pleased gaze of a familiar rappig with very familiar set of markings around its red eyes.
Jade suddenly developed a very prominent tic in his left eye.
He shook his head, flinging droplets of water off his soaked hair and face (and neck and part of his shirt). The rappig snorted happily at the perceived attention and braced its front legs on the doctor's knees, tail wagging merrily. Slowly, almost instinctively, Jade picked up the animal, who somehow managed to give the impression of smiling despite not having the proper facial muscles and ligaments and-
Stop babbling, he mentally berated himself, his expression an excellent mix of rationale, utter confusion, and dawning horror, There a perfectly logical explanation for this. Peony has simply come aboard, for whatever perfectly illogical reason.
