"From the events that happened today... we see what you truly are - a demon in the skin of a human. Therefore, from tonight you are henceforth ex-communicated from the prestigious Hijikata clan. May the gods have mercy on your soul."

Even despite his young age and the lack of academics on his own studies, Hijikata knew what that word meant.

Ex-communicated.

Exile.

Abandoned.

He had been thrown away, just like that. For doing what has never been done, for accomplishing what should not have been accomplished. Just because of this... a reason so shallow, he - a kid barely in his teens - had been given the worse punnishment of all. They could not kill him, for he was too young. Many of their old-fashioned laws would not work for one of his age; so in the end they did this. Exile from his family.

From young, he had never been attached to them anyway. He was put aside, cared for by caretakers hired by his parents as they fawned all over his elder brother, who hogged and loved all the attention and would always tease him for not having any. But rather than angering him, Hijikata was instead driven with the single-minded desire to surpass his brother - and to prove to the world that he was worthy of his name. And so he had trained endlessly from young, growing to be harsh upon himself and upon the expectations that few had on him. He could not let those who believed in him down.

And now, he finally managed to do what he had wanted to accomplish... and this was the reward he got. Exile. It was safe to say that from that moment, whatever last bonds he had with his own family utterly shattered. The names he had been called with had cut deep into his heart, hollow as the clatter of his wooden sword that had fallen to the ground at the shock of what he got from all this.

Toshirou still had not managed to get over it, but he managed to suppress his broken heart for now. Though the skies reflected the emotions locked inside him - a stormy, cloudy night and the moon in no sight, casting the streets in an inky darkness - Hijikata still set out, a small bundle of things packed and slung over his shoulder as the thirteen-year-old cast a last glance at the empty streets of Bellcius before turning to leave quietly. After all that had happened in the day, the teenager really didn't want to face anyone else lest he would truly break down.

They called him a demon after all, and demons didn't cry.
