I am attracted to Trinity because of the deep sense of tradition that it has. Growing up in Los Angeles, I have led a life thoroughly not seeped in tradition. Los Angelenos are very concerned with the present. My house has a historical plaque because it was built in the 1920's. Neither of my parents are from the U.S. and their lives in L.A., as well as mine, have been a scramble to create traditions that do not last very long. My high school's first year as a high school was my first year as a student, which led to our class and the two that graduated being referred to as the "guinea pigs" and then the "pioneers" when administrators realized "guinea pigs" was not exactly and encouraging term. Trinity's reliance on its tradition as a base to build from while celebrating the individual is what my brain is craving. I believe that studying at Trinity for a year will give me a taste of how to mix tradition and excellence and a dash of adaptation. I want to push my comfort boundaries for a year and experience a way of life that I am unused to and in a broader context I think that living in Dublin and attending class can do that for me.
Academically, I feel that Trinity will give me a grounding in the classes I choose to take while allowing me to experience an educational process I am unfamiliar with. The schools I have attended in the U.S. have taught in a non-traditional manner, with few tests and little emphasis on the grade, this has allowed me to love learning even in subjects that are difficult to master and excel in subjects that come more naturally. I hope to gain an understanding of the subject matter along with an understanding of the different ways that societies approach the same subjects.
