Except for Cocoa, who lured me here with the siren call of steampunk AU -- I'm normally awful with multi-fandoms, but I'm willing to brave it for you guys. It's all for you.
ANYWAY. I'm bringing in Discworld's Rincewind, as an absolutely inept wizzard from Krapmork-Nakh who generally spends his life stowing away on ships, falling off Reial, and running from one life-threatening thing to another. He's currently working on the Amestris as an entertainer; translation, "terrible stage magician" and occasionally "even more terrible standup comedian". It's v. depressing, I promise you. He's incredibly dry, cynical, selfishly opportunistic and easily-terrified. He has the most atrociously bad luck in the world, yet somehow always survives his misadventures, which might actually make him the luckiest man in the world. Possible connections: people interested in magic, people who have tried to kill him, friends people who aren't trying to kill him, people who have been attacked by his sentient luggage, people from Bydan or Krapmork-Nakh?
