Weird Sims 2 Categorizer Problem

Sep 21, 2011 22:03

So yesterday on a whim, I downloaded the Sims 2 Categorizer from simwardrobe and decided to try it out on my downloads folder. It didn't work; only some furniture and accessories would show up, but for hair, eyes etc., only a flashing, empty thumbnail showed up. So again out of sheer stupidity on a whim (can you tell I have no idea how to use these ( Read more... )

I have no idea what went on there, but I thought the Categorizer was just for objects anyway. Also, it apparently doesn't work well with compressed files. Anything you want to do with it could probably be done safer in SimPE. Anyway, if I were you, I'd uninstall it and see if that stops the problem. It probably can't make it worse!

Thanks for the suggestion! However, something is REALLY wrong, it seems. The Categorizer showed up nowhere under programs, which probably indicates that I didn't install it properly in the first place. Since I don't know how to uninstall manually, I did a full system restore to before I installed the Categorizer ... and it's still happening. ><"

That'll teach me to fiddle around with programs like that willy-nilly at 2 AM in the morning. I guess I have a long night of troubleshooting ahead of me. But thank you, anyway!

Ack! Hmm. OK... first things first, I'd search the computer for the Categoriser. It not showing up in the list of programs just means it didn't make a shortcut there (or it's got a stupid name). It's probably still lurking on the hard drive somewhere. Go to Windows Explorer and have a look in the folders, see if it's hiding in Programs. Also, it may help to see what's loading when Windows does. I don't know what version of Windows you're running, but I know that for XP and Vista, you can do this by typing msconfig into the Start Menu. It will bring up the System Configuration, then under the Startup tab, you should be able to see what's starting when Windows loads.

I will take engram_au's suggestion and use the RegCleaner. It helped me a great deal earlier this year when I still had remnants of my old graphics card lurking around. That might work. Thanks!

The Categoriser is for objects only, not for Bodyshop content. As sushigal said, anything you wanted to do with hair or clothes that you were trying to use it for would be done better and safer in SimPE.

Sounds like the Categoriser is running or installed some sort of script on startup. Do try uninstalling it and see if it helps. Or you could try getting into the start up menu and disabling the script/Categoriser/whatever the heck is doing this from running on startup. I used to do this in WinXP but I haven't tried it in Win7 (or Vista) but you could have a poke around and see if you can find where to disable startup programs.

Also, I immediately noticed your D2 icon on the desktop pic. Bring on D3, Blizzard! The wait has been entirely too long!

Oh man, how could I use that thing SO wrong?! I seriously need to get into reading instructions. And I need a facepalm icon. I might have royally boned my computer. x_X

Like I wrote sushigal007 up there, unfortunately the Categorizer didn't show up under programs and I don't know how to delete manually (I deleted the folder from the directory, but that didn't help). I thought a system restore would fix this, but no luck. I will see if I can try your suggestions anyway. Thanks very much! Guess I'll be reading some WinXP tutorials in the next hour or so. XD

Haha, nice catch! Despite my current predicament, I wanna add to the Diablo love. D3 looks amazing, release it already!

If you have XP I would recommend a program called Reg Cleaner. Dead easy to use, let's you clean the registry and control your startup programs and scripts. I'm on my phone right now so I can't link you to it but I will this afternoon (it's just before 8am and I'm about to run off to work). It's not the Microsoft one, it's by another company. It also allows you to make a backup of the stuff you disable so if something stuffs up you can always restore. It was the most useful little utility ever!

Thanks for bringing up the RegCleaner! You don't have to go through that trouble, I actually used it earlier this year so I know how to get it. I completely forgot about it. Great idea. I'll try it right now. And yeah, thanks again, I was seriously starting to freak out. I'll get back once I tried it!
