I was first introduced to the mystical qualities of rose quartz at an aquarium store. The store sold very large chunks of rose quartz to put in fish tanks as contrast. I’d been spending a great deal of time at Magenta, the one local new age store in my home town, and heard from the lady there that rose quartz was great for easing emotional stress and calming anger. As my Mum was about to get re-married I bought up several of the larger pieces and put them up on one of the shelves in the living room. I also brought a smaller piece into my own bedroom because “rose quartz improves the energy of the person it belongs to and the area it is kept in,” according to the owner of Magenta.
Unbeknownst to a younger me, rose quartz is also known as “Love Stone” and “Heart Stone”. It is considered to be beneficent charm to keep at the start of a marriage as it opens itself to all forms of love. It is said to enhance all times of love and happiness while soothing the soul. Rose quartz is said to bring not only gentleness and compassion but kindness, tolerance and emotional balance. It’s potent when used in workings concerning emotional wounds and trauma, particularly grief and trauma from childhood, and can also be used in workings dealing with reconciliation with family and easing unreasonable guilt.
Information I’ve read ties rose quartz with Taurus and partially with Libra as well as suggesting it as an alternate birth stone for January.
Physical Nature
Rose quartz is a member of the quartz or rock crystal group of stones. It is pink or peach in color due to traces of iron, manganese, or titanium in the basic makeup of quarts. It is often cloudy and can be brittle. The stone can fade in color over time so should be kept out of direct sunlight. As it is a hard non-porous stone, it can be cleaned with soap and water.
It is unusual to find crystals of rose quartz. However, there is no scientific reason for why crystals are so rare. It is considered a great mystery. As a crystal, it is known as pink quartz. The stone itself often comes from Brazil. It can also be found in the US - generally in Colorado, Maine (where the first pink crystal was found), South Dakota and Utah) - India, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Spain and the former Soviet Union.
Rose quartz beads dating back to 7000 BC have been found in Mesopotamia. It is believed, however, that the Romans and Assyrians were the first to use it and jewelry found made by them dates to 800-600 BC. In ancient Rome it was used to make seals in clay and various dyes to show ownership and who had created an item.
Mystical Workings & Crystal Healing
The use of rose quartz in love spells and rituals is very common. It’s said to heal broken hearts and can be used to promote emotional resonance, fidelity, and, with caution, attract love. It is also said that rose quartz is a good stone to give to a friend to help foster the relationship.
As an emotional healing stone it is best employed in fields dealing with resolution of grief and trauma. A positive boost in workings to aid children in calming themselves while enhancing feelings of warmth and security is also greatly extolled. Placing a properly charged piece under the pillow can help prevent nightmares and insomnia.
Not unsurprisingly rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra and should be used in crystal healing work that will benefit the heart and circulatory system. Rose quartz is helpful and protective during pregnancy and child birth as well as being purported to aid quests to increase intellect. It is also said to help with fertility and sexual dysfunction. It is theorized to protect against radiation. We do not endorse this as any sort of official protection against radiation.
No, really. Don’t do it.
As we are on the subject of warnings, we would also like to say that all readers are encouraged to seek medical attention for any physical or mental issues from licensed clinical health professionals in conjunction with any metaphysical treatment.
