*Chokes*

Some counties in Virginia shut down all schools today and put up a Severe Weather Alert for a wind chill warning. And, knowing them, some areas have probably lost power, and people flooded the groceries to buy out the bread, milk, and eggs. That's what always seems to happen there O_o;;

Roanoke, Virginia
-10.3 °C
Windchill: -15 °C

Compare that to Toronto. It's warmer already than the past few days have been, and the cold just hasn't bothered me. I just put fleece pants under my pants, wear layered tops, and zip up my down coat and have my flap hat on under my furry hood, and sometimes I wrap a scarf around the lower half of my face if the wind is bad, and even then I still manage to get overheated!
Toronto
-14 °C
Windchill: -26 °C

Virginia should consider themselves lucky. While they close everything down and people panic as usual, they could have it like northern Illinois right now. They're sitting at very cold but their windchill has been going from 35-50 below, and that's in Fahrenheit. And Mandi still goes to work in the evenings :/ At least their wind has died down for this morning!

Rock Falls, Illinois
-29.2 °C
Windchill: -29 °C

And of course there's Alaska and such, which are pretty darn cold right now too!

I dunno. While it's in no offense to people living in the southern US, of course, I just find Virginia's reaction to cold pretty funny...I guess it's because I'm up here and quite used to the cold now. But I don't like the cold one bit, I just bundle up and survive, and I'm sure most people don't enjoy it either :P I HATE being all bundled up and bulky and then getting overheated in stores, and having to take all that crap off and then losing gloves or hats, and having to turn full-body to see anything because my hood allows me to only look straight ahead. I'm a minimalist when it comes to that (I even hate carrying handbags or shoulderbags!) and prefer to have one layer on--or at least just a hoodie over my clothes--and not have to be all bundled. People say it's just because I'm from Virginia, but no sir, it's because I've never liked winter and I never will, and I know lots of Canadians who feel the same way.

Well, that's not quite true that I've never liked winter...I DID like it when I was a kid in New York, but being that young, winter seemed a horribly long stretch, and soon enough I would find myself aching for spring.

Winters in Virginia were very mild, and the only thing I really despised about them was that everything was very barren and grey, and the grass was always shriveled up and a dull bronze color. We rarely ever got snow; we were more inclined to receive ice. Otherwise, winters were quite bearable. Rarely did you find a day that would drop below freezing for a daytime high, and it was usually very sunny out, which made it feel warmer. Some days would be 10* or more Celcius. As far as I can remember in the eleven years I was there, the only truly COLD moments in winter we had were in December 2006, and in early 2008 when that mountain fire threatened The Hellhole (and of COURSE we lost power in that latter event, that's so typical of The Hellhole).

Hell, now I consider -8 to -4 a heat wave xD

It struck me as surprising last week when I was walking through the snow. The sun was half-out, shining on the whiteness, and the sky that peeked out from between the wooly clouds was the purest, softest blue. I was immediately struck with all kinds of memories of my handful of winters in New York just ten minutes from the shores of Lake Ontario, and I realized that the sky and sun just somehow looked the same as it had there when I was a child. It never looked like this in Virginia; I can't explain it without sounding like a right idiot, but that's when I knew there was nothing quite like a northern sky and a northern day.

But give me spring and summer and thunderstorms any time now!

And now...RANDOM SUBJECT CHANGE.

*Glares at my brown pants* So Trevor got me these textured velour track pants back in early September; they were $10 at Cotton Collectibles. Since I haven't been able to fit into my jeans since June (or earlier, I can't remember), I've been wearing them almost constantly, and lately with fleece pajama pants underneath in lieu of thermal leggings. They're sooo comfortable and soft, but now the fabric is starting to separate from the waistband in the back and the crotch area has become pretty threadbare. I've gotta buy new pants this weekend at Stitches or Le Chateau or whoever's running a decent sale, and I'm getting blue thermal leggings just because I'm going to be wearing them under my white skirt next Thursday and it'll be my "something blue" :)

I also need a new bra or two. My old Victoria's Secret ones no longer keep my goods a secret _
