Wool socks are the bomb for cold feet. It also makes a huge difference which shoes I'm wearing. The really thin soled ones are actually warmer than a pair of boot-shoes.

For you, I would suggest looking at the LLBean wool ragg socks; they come in XL mens so you should be able to get some that are big enough. They're like $20 for 2 pair of crews. They're not for wearing in shoes because they're hella thick, but they're fabulously warm when worn with non-thong cheap rubber thong sandals (can't get the between the toe bit to work with socks that are too thick to be bendy). I've got croc shoes that are stretched out enough to wear with the ragg socks and so cushy I can stand in the kitchen for an hour without hurting my foot bones.

The other thing... kneesocks are WAY better for keeping your feet warm. I figure if the leg is warmer, the blood loses less heat before it gets to the toes. I buy mine from sock-dreams.com.... they actually tell you (for the plus sizes at least) what the stretch diameter is at the top of the sock. And they sell thigh-highs so you're assuredly going to be able to find something at least knee-tall... but I'm not sure they'll have anything with large enough feets.

I sympathize with you on the teaching stuff... I spent 4 months of Thursdays teaching an 8 year old just the knit stitch... not "how to knit" but the very first step you learn. Most people pick it up in about 20 minutes, and might need a refresher if they don't practice at home. After 10 lessons, she still couldn't do it but insisted on wasting my time anyway. And after all that, I got fired.

wow... 4 months on a single knitting stitch? i learned from my grandma when i was a kid, and i picked it up in about 20 minutes. :P i never got past the knit stitch, but i only tried to knit when i was hanging out with my grandma over the summer.

thanks for the sock advice. we're about to do a massive sock-drawer-reorg at my house, so i could probably manage a couple pairs of thick socks. i have some weird knit socks that have a super-thin synthetic sole of some kind. those do manage to keep my feet mostly warm. but i'll try the ragg socks, i'm always looking for ways to improve the comfort of my footed zone.

:) hope all's well with you.
