Poetry.

'This is the new year' came out of the October-session of Poetry for the Masses!, and falls along the aumtumn theme. It was prompted and sponsored by
starcat_jewel. Her sponsorship triggers a 2nd 13-word horror story.

At this time, one poem remains. A riff on the traditional haiku, 'Toasting Pumpkin Seeds', follows a 5-7-7-5 format.

This is the new year

I count my new years
based on the new years.
I've spent sixteen years
starting school in September,
missing days to dip apples in
honey, and pray for my loved ones.
The fall harvest is as much about
bounty in life and love as it is
in feast. In the old days,
we slaughtered goats and sheep,
presenting them as gifts to the
Everlasting Presence. And while
sacrifice is certainly frowned
upon in modern dress, we still
pray facing to the east. We
take part in the bounty
that is our growth, celebrating
the change of seasons, remembering
autumn is not the touch of death,
but that life ever continues
even in the darkest
night.
