Saw Salman Rushdie speak last night in some church in Harvard Yard through the Harvard Bookstore. Unfortunately, my seat was behind a columnm, so spent much of the reading/talk peering around, but still very good. Read a section from his new book The Enchantress of Florence, which yes, I bought, and had him sign, along with my copies Shalimar the Clown (also a first edition), and East, West.
Brief question and answer section after, with the normal questions. What was his writing process like? What did he like to read? Which books did he find humorous? And what advice did he have for new and/or struggling writers? His advice to the last? - best damn answer I've heard. Period.
If you have to ask that question, don't write.
He was very polite, commented on the spelling of my name, to which I just smiled, and went along my merry way.
Thoroughly glad I went. (Plus, I learned Gregory Maguire will be pasing through this way in October on tour for his new book. Already plotting if I can somehow manage to get him to sign that, in addition to the other three books I have of his still unsigned.)
