I really need a Yul Brenner icon for this subject.
In case you had not heard, I am looking to purchase a house. This process is a lot like the Cheese Shop skit in Monty Python.
Me: I was in the area and I thought I would contact my real estate agent to purvey what opportunities were available in this general area that one might invest in that would not depreciate over much over time.
STL: What?
Me: I would like to buy a house!
STL: Oh good. We have houses. What kind of house are you looking for?
Me: Well, it can't be too small...It can't be too run down... It can't be too far away from work...and it can't cost more than this much. (Flashes note to STL) The bank won't let me have more than that.
STL: Hmmmm let me see...how is this?
Me: Um, no basement, nope.
STL: I see, I see, wants some storage space, ok how about.... THIS!
Me: Um, is that postage stamp?
STL: No, that is the lot.
me: no.
STL: OK, hmmm how about this one?
Me: I like windows on my windows.
STL: OK, how about... this!
Me: Um, nice windows, but what is that open air thing in the back.
STL: Oh, that is just part of the rehab process.
Me: They need to build a wall?
STL: Well the old one was no good.
me: Um, does the house come with walls?
STL: Don't be silly. Of course it doesn't. That is part of the joy of a partial rehab. Now you can put the walls where ever you wish.
Me: I see, um, how about no.
And so on. Truth be told, it really hasn't been that bad. You just have to realize early on that there is going to be a compromise made of some kind. You are either going to have money, a great location, or time. Me, I am not a mogul. My loan is not that huge, so I have to pick houses that save me money. That means I get to sacrifice great location or time I need to spend on the house, or both.
My mother, who has of late been made of money, and has kind of forgotten what it is like to not have it, doesn't quite see eye to eye with me on this one, or is disturbed that I might actually like the sacrifices I have been making. This bothers me because we usually see eye to eye on this kind of thing.
Fortunately my partner in crime is so totally with me on this adventure and we see eye to eye on many of the issues. That is kind of refreshing to discover that our tastes are so similar. I am thinking that with the kids help we can actually make a decision on it by early next week. Wish me luck.
BTW, I got my icon!
