That was irrelevant. The (in)famous Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, See No Evil monkeys originated in Japan. Specifically, on a wall of certain building in the Nikko shrine complex that houses a white horse.
Yes yes. I went for Spring Break (I know, crazy, but it was my only chance to go). Tokyo was kind of our "base" because we were staying with friends who live there (in Roppongi, specifically). You will have an AWESOME time!!
Hmmm...at the risk of sounding too negative, I'll just go ahead and say that Japan is quite expensive. If you want to save, there are a few things you can do

Going in July. Not the best choice at all, but I don't get the second half of my research grant until then. We have been looking at weird little hotels and guesthouses to stay in because the normal ones are looking way too pricey, like you said. I hope whatever we end up being able to afford isn't a gross love hotel or something.
And I will ONLY eat at little local places! I can't wait. Hopefully being a vegetarian who drinks nothing but water and tea will get me somewhere over there. I also adore subways.
It sucks, but I think we are going to be stuck in Tokyo and won't be able to venture away from there, unless you can recommend something two paupers might be able to afford. I wanted to visit somewhere small and quiet if possible--not necessarily Kyoto because I heard it was really touristy, but something at a different pace than Tokyo.
Any tips you have to share I will gladly eat up. How much was your airfare, if you don't mind me asking?
