Uhura sighs, listens to the sound of the aether, the resonance of the dark matter, the whispers of the planets. The entire universe speaks among itself. It is a language beyond comprehension, but not without preternatural beauty. All one has to do is listen. And listen she does, a slight smile parting her lips as she takes a breath to wonder what it is that an entire universe thinks about, talks about, dreams about.

That right there sold me. It brought up a memory from way back when in high school science where we actually got to listen to recorded echoes of the big bang (or what scientists believe is the echo of it). It was all static and noise and nothing discernable, but it's one of those things that makes you think, "Wow. I'm listening to the sound of the universe - the entire universe - expanding and moving outwards to who knows where." Uhura sitting at her station made me think of that.

Admittedly, I then lost that moment snickering to myself over the encounter with the Orions, but what can you do? Lol.

Oh, thank you! I absolutely agree with you--it is amazing to think of all the things we can not hear. In fact, that section you just quoted was the very first paragraph I wrote from this chapter, and I love it.

There is something out there, a series of recordings from the Cassini spacecraft, from the planet Saturn. They are... astounding. And creepy. And amazing. You must listen to them! I can provide a link, if you like. :)

Really? I wonder if those were the recordings I listened to. It was years ago though, so I don't remember. I would LOVE a link!

I remember what I heard was creepy, amazing, astounding, all those things! It was like a crackling, white noise or something I guess, but it was SPACE.

Wow. This wasn't the same recording I listened to in high school. That was just a crackling, like static on a tape. This is.. well, it's just so creepy, yeah.

I have to admit, these recordings remind me of the sound effect made when the Narada emerged from the black hole. Hmmmm...

Perhaps they may have been onto something!
