Today was wonderful. It made up for the absolutely horrible day that I had yesterday!
On Tuesday, I came home to see my Dad smiling brightly and excited to talk to me. I wondered what was up. He soon told me that he was having an awesome time at work because he was working with engineers who were actually getting things done. In the past, my father has gotten extremely frustrated with people who don't take their jobs seriously and who show up to work, do what they have to do not the fired and go home. My dad sees things that aren't right, but being an electrician, he has no connections to the top of the region to the poeple who control the money. My dad was especially excited because these engineers were young, and their report would automatically get to the top and get finally get things done.
He was also excited because the engineers wanted to talk to me.
He had told them all about me and my career ambitions, but that I had some fears and things that I didn't know about the universities. They said they'd be glad to talk to me.
So on Wednesday, my Dad was supposed to call me at 10:45 and tell me to come over. By 11:10, I was pissed. I tried calling the Plant but they said he'd been called away and that he said he'd be back soon. Great, I thought. But 11:15, he calls and wants me to head over the plant. Only catch: he wouldn't be able to make it. I was upset because I wasn't really comfortable going to a place I had never been to before and speaking to these people I had never seen before either. But I put on a brave face and said okay.
But things got worse when I couldn't find my keys (I had lost my originals and was using my spares). My sister was grouchy, and I was getting really upset. It was now 11:45 and I knew I'd never get there. Defeated, and with tears in my eyes, I was driven to work by Jessica. Work really sucked because I was crying when I got there and I had 1500000 "what's wrongs?" to deal with, which really sucked. Luckily Nick took pity on me and let me do the Homes in the corner for a bit. Luckily, I had left a number for my dad to call me at and he made it all better by telling me that they'd still be in the area the next day.
Wow, am I glad we switched the day! Today I was schedualed to go in at 1 (which got switched to 3!) and so we had much more time. I had located my keys too. I had dropped them outside of my car door in the grass. So my Dad called me on time this morning and I was off. I met him at the plant and met the two engineers: Chris and Anita.
They were great! Anita has done about 12 years of schooling and has been everywhere. She went to UBC for her undergraduate and attended Waterloo for Graduate studies. Chris went to McMaster for 5 years for engineering and management. It was awesome to get their viewpoints on everything. Both of them cleared up all of my concerns and changed my views on some things. Anita explained to me that Waterloo was much more academic and competitive, and the co-ops made it less social. However, she told me that its almost impossible to flunk out of. Chris said McMaster was nice because you specialize in the second year, not the first, so there is time to think about what you want to do. Also, he said McMaster was more social and fun. Although neither had been to Queens, they both agreed that it was nice school too with lots of traditions and great atmosphere too.
I think everyone should get a chance to talk to someone in University, because it took a whole lot of stress off. They told me that lots of people transfer from one University to the next. So if I'm concerned about choosing the "wrong" university, I won't be stuck at it for the whole four years. Also, I was worried about what I would have to know going into University, but they cleared that up by telling me that they teach you the programming language you need to know in first year and they teach you all the fundamentals. It just moves a little faster and requires some self-teaching on our part.
Overall, I had a really great time and I'm so glad I had that opportunity. I'm even more excited for university now!
Oh yes, and baseball finally came to a close last night. We came fourth out of five teams in the playoffs, which was much better than what I expected.
Alright, I hope everyone has a great day!
