on mysteries

Finished Borrower of the Night a few days ago, and bought the next Vicki Bliss with my monthly credit (also Lion in the Valley, which is Peabody #4).  So far, really enjoying Lion; probably about 1/3 through.  Barbara Rosenblat is a truly fabulous narrator.  She never fails to deliver and always delights!

My repeat, nighttime listenings of late have been Singing in the Shrouds (by now, I can almost recite it word for word) and Dead Man's Folly.  Narrated by James Saxon and David Suchet, respectively, both are excellent reads, both in the story and in the narration.

I've requested lots of books from the library, as well, as I am continuing to search for more good mystery series.

Ian Rankin:  so far I'm not liking Knots and Crosses, but we'll see.  I enjoyed the Rebus tv series with John Hannah, so I don't want to give up completely yet.

Elizabeth George:  Absolutely hated the Inspector Lynley tv series, but then realized have already read in the series with Playing for the Ashes, which have read 2 or 3 times without realizing it's part of a series.  So, starting A Great Deliverance; thus far hopeful.

Dornford Yates:  Still love these mysteries; wish were available as audiobooks.

P.D. James:  I've decided to give The Private Patient another chance.  While discussing books on my visit to Kim a few weekends ago, I realized that possibly reading about the murder of a recovering surgical patient while self recovering from surgery was probably not the best idea.  Got it on CD from the library, so is car listening.  I'm liking it much better this time around, though I really am not wild about the narrator.  Charles Keating is still the best James narrator.

Deanna Raybourn:  Speaking of narrator trouble, each of her mysteries has had a different narrator, and only the first was very good.  Am having trouble listening to the latest because the narration is so jarring.  May have to read hard copy, though increased illness (thus lack of concentration!!) makes reading quite difficult.
