[ History ] :
Kyouya grew up as the third-born son to the wealthy Ootori family, who owns a large portion of the medical field. With two very smart older brothers, and an older sister, there was little hope for him amounting to much. Or so he thought. The first glimpse we get into Kyouya’s past late in the series depicts him as a calculating boy, who agrees to attend social events to only better the Ootori name with the other student’s respective businesses. He seems to have a mental file on everyone he talks to, maintaining a polite persona, even if he dislikes them.
The head of the Ootori family, Kyouya’s father, is an immensely strict man, who sets his standards to almost impossibly high standards, claiming them normal for the Ootori family. He blatantly told Kyouya that he would not be impressed by high grades and class president, but had to go beyond that of which his brothers had done in order to gain his approval. Kyouya accepted this responsibility readily. The relationship between he and his family, save for his older sister, is very business like. And at this point in time, Kyouya believes he is not to outstep the boundaries set by the accomplishments of his brothers. After all, he is the third son.
This is best represented in the series by a painting. Kyouya has found a good middle ground within his boundaries (the frame), between maintaining the Ootori name and not surpassing his brothers. This was a painting he was meant to continue forever within the same four walls.
And then he met Tamaki.
Tamaki turned Kyouya’s world completely upside down without even realizing it. He met a 14 year old Tamaki in middle school, when he was told to befriend him by his father to gain interest in the Suou family. ‘Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.’ Kyouya, upon first impression of Tamaki, considered him a complete idiot. He was a foreigner with overdramatized ideals about how the Japanese culture worked, and a near obsession with seeing parts of Japan. Tamaki also flat out broke the unspoken rule of avoidance of touch in Japan by grabbing onto Kyouya quite dramatically and clinging onto him when the spoiled Tamaki got his way.
Kyouya was taken back by this, but remained in his cool position. First a kotatsu, and then a vacation to Kyoto, then to Okinawa. Nothing satiated the young Suou, and he was always left wanting more and doubting Kyouya’s abilities. This nearly made a madman out of Kyouya, who planned an ultimate vacation and furthermore prepared himself to answer every single one of Tamaki’s stupid questions.
… Only for it to be shot down by Tamaki, claiming that always going out on vacations was childish and Kyouya should study more. This was, slowly, pushing Kyouya to his breaking point. Tamaki had already doubted his abilities, blended right into the class without him even realizing it, and now, insulted him by calling him childish. He was ready to burst at the seams.
The next encounter he had with Suou Tamaki was life-changing. Tamaki had come to visit him in his home while he was away, and had been entertaining his family with his immense piano skill. Kyouya was more than surprised, not because of the skill, not because of the tears he could see in his brothers eyes, but because he was caught off guard by the tears he felt himself. Nothing had really affected him like this.
After the display, the two go into Kyouya’s room to chat. Tamaki asks why Kyouya isn’t taking the Ootori company, which makes Kyouya quite aggravated. Tamaki says that his eyes are not satisfied with the current situation and that he is more zealous than his brothers. This… well… This is where Kyouya completely snaps. He flips a table, and ends up on top of Tamaki, gripping his shirt like he’s going to punch him. He then yells at Tamaki, angry because everything’s been handed to him-he doesn’t have to work to inherit his family’s company, and he’s given up without trying.
Tamaki, who adapts a serious face, tells him that he’s the one who hadn’t been trying and if he wanted to surpass his brothers, he should do it. Suou Tamaki had seen right through him.
This begins an epic transformation within Kyouya. Suddenly, the ‘walls’ of his canvas are gone, and he is able to really blossom, and explore outside of his boundaries. Tamaki is right. He has the ability to surpass his siblings, and shouldn’t be held down because of his place in the family. Kyouya, overcome with relief, busts out laughing, and thus, a beautiful friendship formed.
In reality, Kyouya joins the Host Club not only because it was a ‘crazy idea’ but because it was something his brothers had never done, and thus, a way to surpass them. Thus, the Shadow King is born.
Towards the end of the series, the Host Club, throws a public event in which Kyouya’s father slaps him across the face, saying it was a waste of time, and ridiculous. This is a very humiliating thing, but Kyouya keeps his cool demeanor, as if nothing had happened. If there’s one thing Kyouya had learned, it was how to dish out revenge of the sorts. In the end of the series, it is revealed that Kyouya had surpassed his father’s expectations by saving the company from a third-party buyer by buying the company himself, then turning rights back over to his father.
[ Personality ] :
Ootori Kyouya is not someone who is easy to put into a nutshell. He hides many of his traits behind the cool type persona he has created through his time at the Host Club. To really get in deep to his mindworkings is nighimpossible. Here’s the mun’s best attempt at it.
Kyouya is known as the Cool type in the Host Club. It really fits him well. He is known to remain calm and cool in most situations, and always keeps this cool, polite demeanor with customers and even people he might see as profitable. He is almost poetic when he speaks with customers, but more casual when irritated, or among Tamaki or other Host Club friends. Kyouya’s appearance is always clean, kept, and pressed, and he commonly crosses his arms, or has one hand in his pocket, feeding into that Cool type he’s so well known for.
Ninety-five percent of the time, Kyouya keeps his cool, even in the most averse of situations. It takes him a lot to really become angry. He’s definitely not someone you want to irritate either. He has a horrible habit of capturing the most wonderful blackmail, or will exact revenge by choosing specific information to give. Worst case scenario, he slams his fist into a car and dents the living hell out of it. We’re not talking a ding. We’re talking replace the hood smash.
But that’s only five percent of the time. Any other given moment, Kyouya is mostly quiet, opting to sit back and watch the most amusing of situations unfold. Kyouya knows when to divulge most information, and will do so when it is most opportune for him, and he’s seen no more use in letting the situation drag on any further. He’s also usually the first to remind someone that they have a debt to pay, or a contract to fulfill. This includes ridiculous plans that his fellow Club members dream up. He’ll punch holes in them if not for profit. He’s just that guy.
Kyouya claims himself an egoist, and that he won’t do anything unless profit is involved in some way, almost responding in a very apathetic way when profit isn’t involved. Whether it is rapport for the Ootori family, or his own personal gain. However, this is shown to be not necessarily true. Haruhi so graciously pointed out that he has done things to help people without a sincere reason. Kyouya doesn’t like to see people taking an easy way in. He’s very honest, and does not like to see liars, cheaters, cheapskates, or anything like that. He’ll point out these people very blatantly. Most of all, Kyouya does not like owing people. Anything. Ever.
Kyouya often messes with the members of the Host Club. He seems to spur on competition for his own amusement, using things that he knows the club members like, be them pictures of Haruhi, or even their favorite food dishes. This is his own way of having fun in the club. Though he will watch these events unfold, he will not allow the Host Club to come into bad light. After all, he is a business man.
The next thing to know about Kyouya is that he is one hell of a manipulator. He knows exactly what to say in most situations to get the pieces to fall into their perfect place. Kyouya sees through people easily, but doesn’t allow many to see through him. Kyouya tends to control most situations with things like blackmail, reminder of debts, or some kind of reward. Like any curious, manipulative person, he has certain questions he absolutely must know the answer to, and usually knows how to obtain such answers. With always something to gain, this manipulative bugger is not one to be trifled with.
Something interesting about Kyouya. He is a creature of habit. He will manipulate a situation to his advantage as soon as he meets someone. Be it they’re tied to a very wealthy ally or what, he analyzes them in a moment’s notice. He still does this to this day. However, meeting Tamaki changed a bit of that for him. The difference? Before he met Tamaki, these judgments were shallow. Had no meaning. After, he had motivation to surpass his brothers, thus gaining something from every ally he made. Another brief point to bring up in regards to manipulation is how the Host Club is structured. Kyouya seems to use Tamaki for his charm, the Hitachiin twins for their rowdy brute strength, and Honey and Mori as intimidation. Just a perception.
... Speaking of perception, Kyouya has a lot of it. He was the first to notice that Haruhi was a girl when she stepped into the Host Club for the first time, just by looking at her. He uses this perception to his advantages, which makes him very aware to most situations.
Kyouya has earned the nickname the Shadow King when it comes to the Host Club. Because of his excessive control of the situation and obvious influence on Tamaki, he is sometimes thought to run the show-at least in the behind the scenes. If ever confronted about this, he claims that the Host Club would not exist without Tamaki. This is an area where Kyouya excels in the club, managing most of club finances, most of their activities, the china they serve, where they order their sweets, even down to how they make their money, Kyouya takes care of it all.
Not only this, but he collects data and basic research on any and all Host Club customers. He is almost always with a notebook or computer in his hands, jotting down notes on friends or customers, or handling business. Workaholic much? You bet. He stays up rather late from time to time. Kyouya also gets feedback from customers, just to make sure the Host Club keeps up with its standards.
It’s a known fact that Kyouya sells club members merchandise for profit. He’s known to sell personal items, or even photobooks that have been photoshopped of some of the favorite members. They are a popular group after all. Kyouya is quite happy when in profit, but immensely down when profits slump.
The Host Club can be considered the only real friends of Kyouya, and most of them are kept at arm’s length. They likely don’t know a whole lot about his past or history, but some of them have indicated they don’t like his father. Particularly Honey. Still, this rag-tag group almost acts as a separate family for him. Haruhi, next to Tamaki, has the greatest effect on him. … Which… really isn’t that much. He almost cares for her in an older brother way, and will point out lessons to her in a very forceful, blunt way. It isn’t meant to be mean, but he knows Haruhi will understand. In return, Haruhi is able to ping Kyouya as more helpful than he thinks to strangers. He gets along with Hikaru and Kaoru for a most part and is generally unsurprised by Kaoru’s maturity and Hikaru’s immaturity. Although, he does commend Kaoru on his plotting ability. Both Honey and Mori are fine in his book, through he is not seen to interact with them often. I gather that he respects them, and they respect him.
Tamaki gets a special section, because of the impact he has had on Kyouya’s life. As stated in the history, Tamaki really changed Kyouya’s view of things and really set him free from the confines of staying below his brothers. Tamaki often refers to himself as ‘tousan’ or father. Inevitably, Kyouya got tagged with the nickname ‘kaasan’ or mother. And it’s true. He really is the mother of the Host Club. He generally goes along with most of Tamaki’s ridiculous antics including commoner’s games, and even stares in almost disbelieving awe when the boy rants about his dreams, usually behind the glare of his glasses.
That… does not mean he pulls his punches with him. He will just as readily shoot down ridiculous notions and check Tamaki back into reality if he must. At the same time, he is rather protective of Tamaki and will not allow serious trouble or ill things to befall him. Back on the other hand, Kyouya is known to leave certain pamphlets or magazines around Tamaki so that he gets the idea to host an event regarding them. Hey. Kyouya. Your manipulation is showing.
Kyouya claims there is no likeness between he and Tamaki, though evidence has suggested otherwise. (Helping people without profit…etc). He has a soft spot for Tamaki because he is, essentially, his exact opposite. Selflessness vs. Selfishness. Kyouya can also read Tamaki like a book. He very well knows Tamaki has a thing for Haruhi, as he confides this in Kaoru at one point. However, this is one of those situations he decides to let play out.
Kyouya, like many people, quite enjoys when Tamaki plays piano, as it is very moving. It surprised him greatly when he was younger. … A lot of things about Tamaki surprised him when he was younger. Over the years, it seems like this has gone down.
… Lastly, even though Kyouya will never admit it out loud, he cannot resist Tamaki’s puppy dog eyes look.

[He had remained in the same sitting position for well over an hour, staring at his new surroundings and trying to make his sleepy brain assess the situation properly. So far, no such luck. Curse his low blood pressure. This was completely normal for him, though. He was nearly useless the first hour he was 'awake' so to speak. I-it was best not to bother him in this state. He could be a little... testy... when someone disturbed him.]
...
[He finally seemed to come to, and glanced around at his very new, very strange surroundings once more.]
... What in the...?
[Had... the Host Club done this? No, no, it was much to grandeur for that... They were hopeless without him. ... Maybe he'd done this in his sleep? It wouldn't be the first time. He commonly fell asleep in front of his computer, and woken up in different locations, thanks to Tamaki. Oh, Let us not forget this odd cell phone that was not the one he had. He let out a deep sigh, then began tinkering with the device. It was a good thing he knew his way around most technology. It didn't take him long to figure out most of the functions.]
Ridiculous... I swear when I get a hold of him...

[The feed blips on, revealing a very handsome young man, with black hair and glasses, which are promptly pushed back up the bridge of his nose. He, by now, was half-dry. He puts a polite smile on his face.]
Ah! Excuse me. My name is Ootori Kyouya. I seem to be quite... lost at the moment. If anyone would contribute, I would be more than happy to compensate you. [If... he had anything to contribute with...] ... Oh. And I'm also searching for a loud, flamboyant blond who goes by Tamaki. If you see him, please tell him Kaasan is not pleased.
[Because he owed Tamaki a nice klunk to the head, after all he pulled. Disbanding the Host Club, he was going to be in paperwork for DAYS. ... It was almost chilling how he could keep that polite smile while thinking like this...]
