Had my first fun filled workday in the new Berlin stop and shop. They put me on self-scanner which I now hate. Of all the people that come into the self-scan lane, 70% stand around dumbfounded for a minute till I point to the sign and say, "Self-Scanner". Then they yell at me for suggesting they scan their own stuff (the audacity!) and promptly move to a normal lane. The other 29% can't read or just don't want to and hit lot's of buttons till it starts to smoke. Then they try buy 100 items with no barcodes. If you've ever used the self-scanner and it's said, "This itme cannot be scanned properly. Please wait, an attendant will be with you shortly." That's me, the attendant. I had an employee card that could override errors and stuff, make the computer accept a price. Of course, half the time there's a problem it's because the customer is trying to use a Shaw's card or a broccoli coupon when all they bought was a bag of chips. About 1% of all customers successfully use the self-scanner.
It's haunted too. It kept talking when no one was there and the belts would randomly turn themselves on and off, and go in reverse. I had to reboot one of the machines because the belt would not stop moving.
They gave me another $60 though. I have to start budgeting my money alot. I accidentally spent about $40 on my cell phone in the past couple weeks. Now that I'm paying for myself that's not gonna fly. I have to start recording every penny of mine so I can keep track. I don't want to end up broke.
