Olette rolled her eyes at both Hayner and Pence before holding up her worksheet. “Guys,” she began, her tone warning. “Look. This is due in a week! Why don’t we get it done so we can do other things?”
Hayner glanced over in mid-lick of his ice cream. “Why don’t we do it the last day so we can enjoy our vacation?”
Pence, already done with his ice cream bar, shrugged. “I dunno…maybe Olette’s right.” Then, in a quiet voice, he added, “At least she’s not forcing us to go shopping.”
Both laughed, and Olette narrowed her eyes. “Guys, we are doing this worksheet now, whether you want to or not!”
Hayner stood up. “Nah, you go on ahead. I’m going to head over to the sandlot and teach Seifer a lesson.” With a grin, he grabbed his Struggle Bat and headed out of their usual spot.
Olette slumped - now that one had ignored her, Pence would sadly follow. “Worksheet?” she added hopefully. Even if Pence did leave her to work alone, she would do her worksheet today. So on the last day when they flipped out, she’d be done.
Heh. That would show them.
Pence gave a shrug. “Olette, it’s the first day of break. Can’t we do it tomorrow or something?” Calling over his shoulder as he left the spot too, he added, “Why don’t we hit the beach today?”
She rolled her eyes and sat down, pencil and paper in hand. Well…ugh. This was the problem with hanging out with teenaged boys. Pity no boys her age were mature.
As she worked through the math problems, she bit her lip, tapping the pencil onto the paper. Alright - the answer was plus or minus the square root of 25. …Wasn’t it? Olette glared at the paper, hating the way her new eraser had to clean up her stupid mistake. No, it could only be…
“Five, right?”
She jumped and glanced around. There was no one there. “I must be going crazy,” Olette admitted, shaking her head. Okay, no more math alone. But this was the last problem! She could easily…
“The answer is five. There is no imaginary numbers, so it’s not negative. The answer is plus or minus five.”
Olette wanted to assume that it was a ghost giving her the answers (would that technically count as cheating?) but the ghost voice was so…familiar. And calming.
Strange, she thought to herself, going through her work and realizing that ghost voice was right. I must be going crazy.
Turning once more to convince herself that there was no voice, she caught a flash of blond hair and laughed to herself. That had to have been Hayner. That was it - Hayner gave her the answer-
Waitaminute. Hayner sucked at math. And weren’t those his grunts coming from the sandlot?
Biting her lip and rubbing her arms, she shook her head. Alright. Maybe there was a ghost. A good math ghost - what every girl needed. She smiled to herself before glancing over to a picture that showed her and her two friends from the last summer vacation -
Wait. Wait just a minute… who was that blond boy in the photo? He looked so…familiar. She couldn’t place it, and, while she knew she wasn’t crazy, she had a feeling that he was ghost math boy.
“Olette!”
She jumped and spun around, seeing Pence at the entrance of the usual spot. “Oh, you finished the worksheet?” He grinned before handing her a new ice cream bar. “We’re going to head down to the beach - Hayner’s treating us since he won the Struggle fight!”
“I don’t think that’s very fair!” Hayner protested from outside. Pence laughed and turned back to Olette.
“So come on!” Olette nodded and packed her math up in her backpack.
“I’ll be a sec.”
As Pence left the usual spot, Olette quickly glanced back over to the photo, which looked as it always had. She shook her head and grabbed her bag, running out of the usual spot to join up with her friends.
