Summary: Riku, for one, was nervous about what the island would think of them if they knew about the true nature of his and Sora's relationship.
Both Riku and Sora were the most popular guys in their school. They became especially popular once they came back from their second adventure, in which both were bigger, stronger, and much more worldly than the last time anyone had seen them. The girls in their school were no match for such incredibly good looks.
Kairi, on the other hand, didn’t really mind that her popularity didn’t go up -in fact, it more or less went down with the female set, because she had been with Riku and Sora. She didn’t mind though; they were her best friends.
Many a female would woo over a simple flip of Riku’s hair or a childish yawn from Sora. But no matter how many females would ask, they would never say yes for a date.
Almost all of the school’s population wondered nearly the same question: “Am I too ugly for Riku and/or Sora? How can they not like me?!”
However, no one could guess the truth, and poor Kairi had to suffer with the truth every day.
She was both of their close friends, but did close friends really need to witness the other two with their tongues down each other’s throats?
No -no they did not. Luckily for her (either that, or she would murder them), they had stopped after she had caught them…the second time.
One day at Riku’s house, Kairi finally grew sick of all the girls at school asking her about their love lives, that she finally exploded at the two boys, saying that they should tell everyone about their true love.
Riku and Sora gave her twin looks of confusion before bursting out laughing and continuing to write (they all decided to write letters to those on their journey: Riku was writing to King Mickey and Queen Minnie; Kairi was writing to Hayner, Pence, and Olette from Twilight Town; and Sora, besides a quick note to Donald and Goofy, was writing to all his friends from every world he visited, and that would take him some time). Kairi scowled and threw down her pencil before sitting up on Riku’s bed.
“Seriously, guys! I don’t see why you won’t!” she exclaimed, shaking her head.
Riku sat up as well, raising an eyebrow. “But Kairi, you know how people on this island feel about…well, that,” he said, putting his pencil down and staring at his friend. “I know I’m never coming back here once I’m done college, but… what’s wrong with a bit of popularity?”
“Yeah, Kairi,” Sora chimed in, lightly poking her forehead. “Weren’t you the one who’d overheard what girls would think of us together?”
Kairi frowned, sighed, and then rested her head on her arms that were propped up on Riku’s bed. “I wasn’t even joking, and no one noticed,” she mumbled mostly to herself. “I didn’t think people would take it so hard.”
Shrugging, Riku glanced up to the clock (which read 1pm -- no wonder the light from the window was nearly blinding him), and added another sentence to his paper. “Seriously Kairi -we’ve all changed since we first left. They didn’t expect us to come back the same as before, but if they suspect that big of a change…”
Kairi sat up on the bed, glaring at both. “I thought you guys told me once that you had liked each other before this had all started?!” she exclaimed, jabbing a finger in both boys direction. When Riku looked like he wouldn’t budge from his topic, she bit her lip and turned to face the brunet. “Sora…?”
“Well…I had at least…” he replied, easily falling for the bait. Riku sighed and rested his head against his wall as Kairi began to talk again.
“If you’ve defeated thousands of Heartless -including Xehanort’s -- defeated Nobodies, and saved all the worlds twice, how can you be afraid of something like this?” she asked, resisting the urge to shake him by his shoulders. “How?!”
Sora bit his lip and gave a small shrug. “I don’t know Kairi -I just kinda am.”
Although almost none of this even had to do with her (except, obviously, that they were all best friends), Kairi burst into tears and buried herself into Sora’s shoulder. Sora blinked before giving her a tight hug back; Riku leaned over and enveloped the two into a hug of his own.
That simple action made it clear for the two boys -they were only fooling themselves, lying and hiding their true intentions from their home community. And they had better come through and say the truth. Even if they were for forever shunned from their home island, they still had one person who would always believe in them.
