Author's Notes: Listening to "It's Not Over" forced this fic to the light. Annoyingly so, yes. And I don't like stories that don't have happy endings. ...Which means, of course, I write ones that don't. D:
Sora gave a small sigh as he sat on the front sitting area of the famous ice cream shop that was known island over. He poked his sundae with a spoon. He should be happy with this, shouldn’t he?
Everyone knew that before they had all left on their adventures (or wherever, as they called it), Kairi had liked him. Apparently, now that they were back, her feelings had somehow shifted to Riku. He wasn’t jealous - he always thought of her as his best friend; sister, even - but it was still weird to see her smiling and hugging Riku as more than a friend.
And for some reason, he always felt his heart squeeze when Riku would give Kairi a secret smile -a smile that used to be reserved for him when they were younger.
They weren’t going out, not yet, at least. Kairi had giggled to Selphie, who’d blabbed to Tidus, who mentioned it to Wakka that she was going to tell Riku after school today. The redhead, noting his brunet friend had been acting more depressed than he’d ever seen him before, had told Sora.
So now all he could do was wait. Sora sighed and stirred the remains of his ice cream as it melted. He wanted to slam his head against the table, but didn’t. He was the happy one - he should get his act together! They were his best friends! He shouldn’t be afraid that they would reject him…
Right?
Suddenly, there was a flash of pink and next thing he knew, Kairi was stumbling over her feet and tripping over his, her eyes red from crying. All of Sora’s worries disappeared in an instant and he concentrated on making sure his friend was okay.
“He…said…” Kairi gave a small smile before shaking her head. “I knew that we would always be friends, but…it still hurts, you know?”
Sora nodded in response, offering her some words of comfort before offering to buy her some ice cream (hey, everyone liked ice cream!). She took the treat with a smile.
“We’re all friends, Sora. Can you tell him I’m not mad…and that he still sucks at blitzball?”
Sora gave her a wide grin. Before he took off in a jog to the smaller set of islands, he called, “Course I will!”
---
“Riku…?”
The silver-haired teen was sitting on the paopu tree, staring out into the ocean, his eyes distant. Sora quickly climbed onto the tree next to him and faced him.
“Kairi asked me out, you know.”
Sora sighed, and nodded in response. “She told me to tell you that she’s not mad…”
Riku shook his head. “She couldn’t tell me herself?” Sora narrowed his eyes before hopping down from the paopu tree with a groan and beginning to storm away him. Riku raised an eyebrow, and quickly leaped from the tree and caught up with the brunet.
Sora exhaled and stared straight ahead to his friend (one thing he’d noticed from their adventure - he’d grown as tall and pretty much as strong as Riku) before speaking. “Riku, no matter how much she says that she’s not mad, she’s our friend! She was hurt by what you said!”
Riku’s eyes widened and he lowered his gaze in an embarrassed manner. “She…told you, didn’t she?”
Sora gave his friend a confused look. “Yes, that she was upset…”
“No,” Riku interrupted, shaking his head. “Why I wouldn’t date her.” Sora shook his head as well, and Riku exhaled, before speaking again. “I…I couldn’t be with her…because I’ve…” He cut off before letting go of Sora and walking back to the paopu tree.
Sora blinked, and once again hopped over the tree, sitting on it and staring his friend in the eye. “You …what?”
“I love you,” Riku mumbled, his face turning an intricate shade of pink. “Since we were younger. Maybe not kids, but for some years now.” Sora’s eyes widened and shook his head in disbelief. After a moment, the movement caused him to fall onto the ground, and he continued to shake his head, even as Riku leaped from the tree to inspect the damage. “Sora… I’m sorry. I should’ve never mentioned it.”
“But…you still will, won’t you?” Sora asked, holding his head in his hands. “We can’t just be the three friends anymore! Not if Kairi likes you…and if you…me…” He bit the inside of his cheek; it just didn’t seem to fit in to say that Riku loved him.
He got to his feet with a sigh. Riku stood quickly after him. “I have to go.” Riku nodded his head and lowered it.
“I’m sorry… Can you just pretend that you never heard it…?”
Sora shook his head. “Riku, I love you. You’re one of my best friends, and I’ve known you since…forever. But…I’m sorry.” He pulled the silver-haired teen into a tight hug before turning and running away.
They had to stay a group of three didn’t they? No matter what Riku felt… or what he felt…
A quick glance behind him made Sora see Riku collapse to his knees, but he kept running and shaking his head even as his eyes slowly began to water.
