Oh my word, oh my word. Bristol has the bestest music scene ever!*

(*slight over-exaggeration for dramatic effect - hyperboly - if you know how to spell it, which I obviously don't)

Since I last posted I have been to 3 most excellent gigs.

First of all Decode Really Really Unplugged was utterly wonderful. Lots of people huddled in the cosy downstairs of a bar, sat on the nice clean floor, or on chairs round the side, watching some lovely and varied performances with no P.A. I would into describing each of the acts and pass comment on them, but it would just take up too much time, and generally involve me saying they were all good. I would, however, like to make particular note of the fact that unplugged night traditionally mean lots and lots of acoustic guitars - but the number of other instruments on show - violins, clarinets, cello, banjo, trumpet, etc, was a joy to behold! J'adore the use of orchestral instruments, and there seems to be plenty of that going on in these parts. Particular culprits of this are the Max Milton Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble/Whatever, who I also saw at the second gig of this entry - the Choke Night.

At the Choke night, the MMQ/Q/E/W included a SAW played with a BOW that made nice SOUNDS. Yum. The rest of the night was also good with White Trash Ambition (quite good and enjoyable), Flipron (initially interesting, later dull), and War Against Sleep - who are very good, but definatly a grower - I liked them more the second time I saw them at the third gig of this entry - The October Revolution.

Oh my word the revolution was fun. A shed loads of excellent local bands play an all day gig (2pm till about midnight) in large sized venue in Bristol Students Union building in an attempt to show these poor mites what they'll be missing out on if they stay in the student bubble. Good bands, good company, £4.50 bargain, decent turn-out, and a fun aftershow party/lock-in at a pub! Woo! Lost my voice from talking over the loudness that was in-between sets, as well as during, and got to bed at 5 in the morning. All in all, a suitable bit of crazyness in close proximity to my birthday. 20 today!

I could have really done with lots of sleep last night, to make up for it, but instead I only got to bed at 4:30am after watching Requiem for a Dream and talking to my flatmate Tom loads. Ah well, fact-based fact - that sort of sleep deprevation makes morning lectures BETTER - honest.

Finally, some excellent touring band gigs coming up - Fly Pan Am, Blood Brothers, Silver Mt Zion and MODEST MOUSE are all on the agenda. However. CALAMITY. Modest mouse are playing on the EXACT SAME NIGHT that I am playing MY FIRST EVER SOLO GIG.
What to do?!

Actually - that wasn't a finally at all, as I know feel like going on about how I'm now involved/betrothed to about 4 different bands/musical projects/whatevers - each involving getting to play a different instrument! And re-stating - just in case you Derby people missed it - just how I love the Bristol Music Scene. The music's lovely, the people are lovely, and they think I'M lovely, so everyone's a winner!

Thoughts include setting up a 3-way gig swap between Bristol, Nottingham and Derby, but we'll see what happens.

Oh yeah, and apparently I'm doing some kind of course while I'm here as well?
It is going nicely, and is enjoyable, and the other, little extra net-geek course I'm doing is terribly interesting too.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!
