CHARACTER
NAME: Jason Todd
CANON SOURCE: DC Comics
TIMELINE: Post Countdown; Pre BftC

CANON ABILITIES:

Like the other Robin’s Jason trained under Batman in aspects of crime fighting and martial arts, as Robin he was never as good as Dick but for what Jason lacked in skill he made up for in his brutality. When Jason came back to life Jason traveled the world following Bruce’s footsteps. Jason is a skilled fighter mastering many fighting skills; he has gone hand to hand with his mentor, Batman and his adopted brothers Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, even though he’s never beaten them more than once each, he held his own against them. Jason is extremely skilled with bladed weapons like knives and swords (fighting Green Arrow to a stand still with a katana), his blade skills combined with his hand to hand fighting skill makes him difficult to handle in a fight.

Jason is a skilled detective and has great knowledge of criminology; he is also trained in stealth and disguise. He is also a brilliant marksman being able to hit a target from a distance away. Jason’s has an arsenal of gadgets that rival Batman but unlike Batman’s his uses them with the intention of killing or causing massive injuries.

PERSONALITY:

Jason Todd isn't the most stable of characters. His life has consisted of dysfuntional highs and lows which is reflected in his personality. As a youth, he was bright, cheerful and wanted to do good with his life, though, his life in crime alley had left its mark on him and would surface from time to time causing a rift between himself and Bruce. After his death, Jason was brought back, more bitter and resentful; he was hurt of how his death had gone unavenged, how it seemed that Bruce had moved on with his life, allowing the Joker to continue with his. With the emotions clashing within, the only way Jason finds himself able to deal with them is through anger and violence, the very thing he grew up with, the only thing that was consistent in his life. No matter how good things got, no matter how bad they were, the one thing that would never change was how in the end, the world was just made up of violence and cruelty.

Overall, Jason has a good heart but it is blinded by rage and the desire to fit somewhere, specifically a family setting. The fact that he seems to be unable to feel accepted by those he wants it from most, he is quick to push them away and as a result, distances himself further away from what he wants. He also suffers from the tremendous jealousy he has towards Dick and Tim. Jason could not live up to the legacy Dick had as Robin, died in the process, and was later replaced by another, someone who is considered much better than he ever was.

Jason is the type who is capable of careful planning and strategies but much prefers kicking and punching and shooting recklessly, the more hits he gets in that way, the more satisfying. However, when he does take the time and has the patience for planning things out, he enjoys rubbing in his success in his victim’s face. He isn’t above fighting dirty or cheating, the end justifies the mean.

Basically, he is someone with a short fuse who has been disillusioned by the world he hoped to help make as Robin and the actual result after his death. Jason is set in his ways, stubborn and hot-headed, and will do nearly anything to accomplish his goals or prove his point, even if that means being the bad guy.

CANON HISTORY:

Jason, before ever becoming the second Robin, started out in crime alley. Willis, Jason’s father was nearly nonexistent; he and his mother assumed he was sliding in and out of jail on a constant basis. Catherine Todd, his mother, wasn’t much better company, as she fell ill (possibly addicted to drugs) and became unable to support the two of them. With little options, Jason did what he could out on the street, stealing tires and other various car parts and selling them. His mother eventually would die of an overdose, leaving Jason alone. Instead of going to child services, Jason continued to steal car parts and live on his own.

One day while in Crime Alley, Jason literally ran into Batman. He was caught in the middle of stealing the Batmobile's wheels. Batman was amused, feeling that maybe they were destined to meet; however, the act was not going to go without some punishment. He had convinced Jason, instead of being brought to the police, that he would attend Ma Gunn’s School for Boys. Unfortunately, the school wasn’t at all a school for troubled boys looking to reform, in fact, it was the opposite, training them to be criminals. Realizing this, Jason was able to help Batman bring Gunn and her students to justice.

Feeling that they worked well together, that and the recent dismissal of Dick Grayson, the first Robin, Batman felt that maybe he could help Jason by taking him out of the street and into his line of work. He believed that if he left Jason where he was that one day he would eventually succumb and become a criminal himself. He offered Jason a place in Wayne Manor and the option of becoming Robin, if he wanted it, which he did. Though, it was only after six months of rigorous training that then he was able to don the Robin costume.

After becoming Robin, Jason’s anger issues became more apparent. The first instance was when he found out that Two-Face has killed his father. Angry that Bruce had known the entire time and never told him, Jason stayed in bed for an entire day before going out to patrol. During an altercation with Two-Face, Jason had gotten a hold of him and began to choke him, saying that he was going to ‘kill him’. Two-Face got away and Batman had to confront Jason about his temper only to have him blow up at Bruce for keeping the death of his father a secret. During his second encounter, however, Jason was able to keep his rage in check and allow the police to take him in.

The worst incident involving Jason’s attitude toward dealing with criminals and his emotions was when it came into question whether he pushed Felipe Garzonasa a foreign national involved in abusing his girlfriend and her suicide, or simply allowed him to fall off his balcony. Either way, Felipe had died and Jason did nothing to prevent it.

Shortly after this, Bruce thought it best that Jason take a break from being Robin, give Bruce time to think about what to do with him. With time on his hands, Jason wandered around the streets, specifically Crime Alley. He eventually discovers that the woman he believed to be his mother, Catherine, was his adoptive mother and that his real mother was still alive and in Ethiopia.

It took little hesitation on Jason’s part to jump on a plane and go searching for his biological mother. They are reunited. Shelia, his mother, was an aid worker who was being blackmailed by the Joker, who is using her to provide him with medical supplies. Sheila herself has been embezzling from the aid agency and as part of the cover-up. She ends up handing Jason, who was dressed as Robin, to the Joker who was then brutally beaten with a crowbar and left for dead in the warehouse along with his mother and a time-bomb. Though beaten, Jason still attempts to save his mother, cutting her loose, unfortunately, the doors were locked and they were unable to escape. Batman arrives too late and can only hold Jason’s dead body in his arms.

Six months later, buried in his coffin, Jason’s dead body is resurrected via Superboy-Prime punching the vibrational barrier that once separated the multiverse, reality fractured and splintered. Buried alive, Jason clawed and scraped his way out and walked twelve and a half miles, half-conscious, before being found and hospitalized. Authorities were unable to ID him and Jason was no longer able to help them in that matter as he suffered from severe brain damage. He spent one year as a John Doe in a convalescent home before waking up, still suffering from brain damage and lived yet another year on the streets, homeless, relying on instinct to survive. It wasn’t until he was recognized by former criminal, now homeless man, who had the idea of selling his information on Jason to Ra’s Al Ghul. Jason then spent another year under the care of Talia, Ra’s daughter, who felt that Jason deserved better and threw him into the Lazarus pit. The pit had helped not only heal Jason but he was also able to regain his memory. Talia continued to help Jason as she provided him with money and information about Bruce and the fact that he never avenged his fallen sidekick.

Jason had become enraged with the idea that the Joker lived, that nothing had changed and worse, he was simply replaced by another, someone they claimed to be better. He took his time to resurface in Gotham City, first expanding his training by learning from people of the same caliber as those who trained his ex-mentor, Batman and covering his tracks.

Later, he briefly teamed up with Hush in order to confirm that Batman had indeed moved on and no longer felt grief over Jason’s death. His battle with Bruce, who at the time was unaware that he was really who he claimed to be, had only made Jason realize that he lost his father-figure.

After some time, Jason again reappears in Gotham, this time under the alias Red Hood, an identity that was once that of the man who killed him, The Joker. He began to shake the underground, targeting the new Crime Lord of Gotham. He hijacks a shipment of Kryptonite. Black Mask hires Mr. Freeze to take him out and get back his goods, while fighting with the Red Hood, Batman and Nightwing get involved. It didn’t take long before Jason pulled out, leaving the Kryptonite and saying that he got what he came for, a lay of the land.

Batman slowly begins to put together that the new ‘vigilante’ in town may in fact be Jason Todd. He realizes that his coffin is empty, that there was never a body in it and begins to question whether he really died or not. It isn’t until the Red Hood and Batman actually engage in a one-on-one battle where at the end it is revealed that it really is Jason. He even goes as far as to give him fingerprints and tissue sample, knowing that Bruce is a man of science and cannot deny the results.

Jason takes a small trip to Titans Tower where he confronts and takes down his replacement, he is enraged that though he was a Titan, there was never a memorial made for him. He asks Tim whether he really is as good as Jason has been told and he replies ‘Yes’, at that point, instead of killing him, he rips off the Robin emblem off his suit and leaves with a grudging respect for him.

He returns to Gotham where he held Joker captive, previously brutally beating him with a crowbar, similar to how he was beaten when he was killed. Jason gives Bruce two options, either to kill the Joker, do what he should have done years ago, or kill him before he shoots the Joker himself. Batman managed to throw a batarang and cut Jason’s neck enough to have him release the Joker. The Joker takes advantage of the situation, detonating nearby explosives that engulf the platform they are on and send them plunging into the bay.

During One Year Later, Jason resurfaces dressed up as a murderous version of Nightwing. Dick, was obviously displeased upon discovering this after his year long hiatus. Though after a confrontation with some mobsters, teaming up to take them down, Jason leaves New York and the Nightwing identity and sends Dick a telegram saying that there’s a chance for them to be family.

Again as Red Hood, Jason tries to stop Duela Dent from kidnapping a young celebrity for ransom money, while saving the girl, Duela runs into a Monitor. When Jason caught up to Duela, he wasn’t able to save her from being killed. During her funeral, Jason waits for every one but Donna to leave where he tells her how she died and about the Monitors, already coming up with a hypothesis of who they are trying to kill next. Later, the two of them are attacked by Forerunner but are saved by another Monitor who ends up recruiting them for a mission to the Palmerverse (a section of the Nanoverse discovered by Ray Palmer), in an attempt to find Palmer. During the trip, Jason takes it upon himself to name the Monitor "Bob". Jason seems to have a romantic interest in Donna, and is shown to be visibly disgruntled when her old boyfriend, Kyle Rayner, joins their group as they take their tour to the 52 Earths which comprise the Multiverse.

In one of their trips, Earth-51, Jason meets a Batman who gives him the Red Robin costume, the outfit that was originally for the Earth-51’s Jason before he died. During a battle with a group of Monarch's soldiers, Earth-51 Batman is killed by the Ultraman of Earth-3, deeply affecting Jason. In his grief, Jason murders an alternate version of the Joker who mocks his loss, vacating alongside Donna, Ray and Kyle to the planet Apokolips before Earth-51's destruction. For a short period of time, Jason leaves the group to do things his own way, though he is brought back forcefully by Kyle. Once they returned to their Earth, Jason disposed of his Red Robin costume, abandoned the rest of the group and headed back to Gotham City.

HOW DIFFERENT DO YOU WANT THE MEMORIES TO BE FROM THEIR CANON?

Jason’s memories are going to be relatively the same up until the point where he was supposed to be taken in by Batman. Instead, he remembers being saved when he was in a pinch once or twice by him. He admires Batman and wants to be like him, but it almost impossible considering the environment he lives in.

Bruce is a famous man and many people know about him taking in two boys. Jason envies them even though he doesn’t know them well, he’s jealous because he considers his situation much worse than there. They are lucky, he isn’t. etc etc.

As he gets older, he joins some gangs and gets involved in some shady business. Though, his sense of justice and desire to be something like Batman never left him. He also has difficulty holding a job for long but right now works at the docks.

PLANS FOR YOUR CHARACTER:

Cause trouble while try being helpful but not really. Argue with everyone he meets. You know, the usual Jason like things.

SAMPLES

LOG SAMPLE:

The docks reek of the latest catch and perhaps some of yesterday’s too. He should have been used to it by now; after all, he’d been at this job for a few months already. In a few more months, it would end up being the longest job he had ever held. But honestly, he could never get used to that stink, he hated it. It always felt as if it was his first time there. He didn’t even handle fish at the docks; he only worked some of the machinery or just ended up carrying the cargo of other ships. But since they shared the docks with the fishermen, it always stunk. It was the kind of smell that would stick to him and even after a long hot shower, he still smelled like fish, oil and smoke.

Money was money, he couldn’t really complain (even though he did regardless), he had to do what he could to keep the landlord from bitching at him every time he decided to show his face and, well, eating was important too sometimes. He liked to fool himself this way though, believed he was doing a good job by working hard living honestly even though he didn’t like it; he was a good citizen. Never mind the late nights out with the gangs, kicking each other’s face in for one reason or another. That was different. Those kinds of people were no good, they were criminals, most of them at least, and so who cared if one or two of them died. He was only doing his own job of cleaning off the streets of scum. He was a good citizen.

He would never forget the time he was saved by a hero, Batman. He could never forget and yet the memories always felt so awkward, as if there were made up. But Jason knew they were real, things were just tough as a kid and so of course the few good memories felt out of place. He had managed to steal the wallet of some big time crook; unfortunately he wasn’t as slick as he was now, so he got caught. He was so sure he was going to die, laying there in the alley curled up as they beat him. But then suddenly it stopped, he didn’t dare look though. This was the only time he would ever admit he was so scared. It was only when he felt a gloved hand on his head and heard Batman speak that he looked up. If moments could actually change lives, that would have been one of them. Nothing really changed though, not Jason’s life at least. He admired Batman, he wanted to be like him, but life never changed. He still stole to survive and he was still stuck in the slums. Even now, Jason still lived in the shitty part of the city, hung around bad company and he wasn’t stealing anymore but he might as well have been. Jason didn’t think about that often though, he was after all, fooling himself. He believed was going to save this city one day, one way or another.

JOURNAL SAMPLE:

[ messy chicken scratch, letters are mostly in caps, he never really got the hang on cursive :( ]

I threw this out, twice.

I have zero interest in laying out my feelings on paper nor do I have any desire to spill what goes on about my days and evening here. It is no one’s business other than my own. And if I ever did, I would not write any of it on here where I am sure others can read it.

Though, I could probably write whatever and it wouldn’t be as if any of you would know if it were true or not. It could be like a messed up story time, or one would be better off minding their own.

NOTES:

Jason may or may not snap at some point and go insane. He does that every now and then.
