After a lot of work to the novel, I've decided to take a break and work on a short story. It's for my father for Father's Day, and though I know he probably doesn't deserve such effort, I can't stand the thought of giving him another tie. The story is set in Victorian New Orleans, and deals with race relations among the rich Europeans and descendants of Haitian and African slaves. It's basically a horror story, and though I know I shouldn't, the concept of Voodoo plays an essential role. Am I falling into a cliche? Yes. But this is merely for entertainment for a hard to please, and history obsessed man, who probably couldn't take any of the fantasy drivel I've been producing lately. Besides, I've been learning a ton about the steamboats that presided over the Mississippi and flooded cemeteries producing bodies that would find their way down busy rain-filled streets.
It feels a bit like cheating because this stuff writes itself.
