Same as the old boss

I don't know what it is about boss battles, but I end up stopping playing a game right when I get to them.

I have at least three games right now I've played through to the boss battle and have stopped. My second play Pokemon Diamond stalled before Christmas after I lost to Cynthia a couple times. My last session of King's Bounty: Armored Princess* was last week when I lost to the archdemon Baal. Last night I fought Dark Mind in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and lost and I'm not sure when I'll pick it up again.

This has happened to me before, too. I took a months-long break from Portal when Glados did me in the first time. And then when I played again, I was able to win after a couple tries, and it was a rewarding experience (plus I finally learned what all the Still Alive stuff was about - I honestly didn't know). It's not because I can't stand losing - I lose all the time, and I've gotten beaten up plenty of times before in the games. It's not because I don't like to finish things - I like the satisfaction of completion.

Maybe I shy away from challenges and get demoralized too easily. I mean, I'm not very good at video games as a whole, and these boss battles are generally quite tough. Also, they often require different tactics than I've been learning all game, so I have to throw a lot of my skills out of the window. But would it be a satisfying victory still if the boss were a pushover? I wouldn't think so.

I probably also feel a little bad about finishing a game, because then I'm no longer actively engaged in it. It's over, I can close the DS and just not worry about it. Since I play a lot of puzzle games or made-for-replayability games, including board games, which I never truly would be "done" with, the few storyline games I play (the kind that would have boss battles) feel weird to complete.

Maybe I should just hunker down and beat Baal and Dark Mind today. And then I'll probably never touch the games again, which is a bit sad, since I like those games. I guess I just have attachment issues to the games I play.

*Note: There's surprisingly little armor.
