I'm pretty sure I paid more than $100 bringing them home, actually, but I'm pricing them to move. Zoukeimura eyes are very high quality glass, with gorgeous depth, reflection, and nice light threading. They catch light so much better than cheap glass eyes, or even "dead fish eyes" acrylics. I figure, I spend anywhere from $600 to $1600 on my dolls, I want the nicest eyes that will enhance their faces and look gorgeous in pictures. That closeup I posted wouldn't look half as nice if he was wearing some cheap eyes that made him look like just another lifeless doll. All of my dolls (with the exception of Junior) wear either nice urethane eyes which start around $55, or high quality glass eyes, which I've paid upwards of $140 for a pair.
As to why spend so much, it all comes down to how someone best enjoys the hobby. For me, I prefer to try to take really nice photos of my boys, and want them to look as beautiful as possible. If I spend over $1000 on a doll, I don't want to cheap out and get him a $5 pair of eyes, you know? What's the point? ^^; The higher quality, which often comes with higher price, will help showcase my dolls to be at their most beautiful.
Hope that helps explain the mentality of collectors like me a little! XD;
