are you american? i have been thinking of perhaps relocating to berlin for a few months or a year. i'm wondering how difficult getting by there would be.

oh no i never saw this! you should still come to berlin if you're considering it. getting by isn't hard - although if you're american, you can only stay germany for three months and then they come after you. to circumvent this you need to apply for a visa at the auslaenderbehoerde, but it's not that difficult if you can prove that you have the necessary funds to support yourself, and health insurance. this is all made far easier if you have an institutional affiliation (the universitaet der kuenste or kunsthochschule weissensee would be great to use for this if you can finagle it). the authorities seem to require that you prove you have funds ready amounting to EUR 600/month, and that you have 600*no. of months when you apply for the visa. you can get by on far less than that though. if you're looking for housing you can try wg-gesucht.de if you are looking for a shared place and can read german, or, craigslist is actually pretty useful. so is the berlinscholars listhost, which is for all sorts of anglo-american intellects in berlin
