I am not one of those people who spends spring sneezing, winter dripping, and fall catarrhing. I never get sick. And now I have the nastiest sore throat of my life, a headache, a fever (yes, me, actually--as our mothers would say--"running a temperature") and there's no taking time off today or tomorrow, because we're short staffed as it is, there's a million things to do and we have a huge planning meeting today that I'm not going to be able to make it through without a gallon of tea and twelve Ricolas. Really, I could just use an extra two hours of sleep.

So you can imagine my consternation when my housemate told me (at 7:25, when I had showered and dressed and was preparing breakfast) "Oh, the kids are going to school from 10-1 today, they're on a reduced schedule or something. Do you want a ride in now?" I tutor kids. If kids aren't going to be at school, I'm not going to be at school. Here I am at 7:45: conscious, alert, dressed comfortably but suitably for weather that would pass for OCTOBER back East, sicker than a dog, and I have two hours until I have to be at work.
