There are things that hurt; burns for instance - they hurt a lot. Though with physical accidents... It all usually just goes away after moments. What really traumatizes are severe hits to the ego. Betrayal, for one. Betrayal, if performed correctly, can cause nervous breakdowns for days to come, and the one that follows the first shock usually leaves one shaking, cold, without control of one's body - no walking, just movement which you do against your own will, such as scratching and involuntary flexing of fingers and movement of feet. Also, hyperventilation will likely follow with, perhaps, the will to cry but inability to do so. A person will then fall into a temporary state of depressed dementia and refuse reasoning and logic at all costs. Then, associations will bring back mild anxiety attacks as the person begins to learn to cope. Shudders, shivers, shortness of breath, light-headedness, all of these symptoms, because of the person's unstable nerves, will wear the person out, causing exhaustion. if rest is unavailable, passing out is inevitable. Avoid such stresses at work.
