con report

Jul 14, 2004 15:21

World Domination Status: The intense load of work for one summer class astounds me. If I had my way, I'd make my minions do it. (Annie? Please?)

The con report. Because everyone needs to write at least one con report.

Friday: Anne and I ended up bumming a ride from my mom to Anaheim, since I wanted to bring the Rain, which meant driving either the truck or the SUV, both of which are stick (which I'm not allowed to do by myself until I'm back on my Adderall). Was worth having to deal with the parent - the Rain was a big hit.

Gripe no. 1: the lines at Registration. What was up with that? I was pre-paid and pre-registered and I had to wait 2 1/2 hours, the whole time wearing the Rain, because stupid Hilton didn't have our room ready until 2:30 and we got there at around 12:30. Sure, I was planning to wear it on Friday anyway, but not in the line. Wearing a giant Clow card means you can't sit down when your legs get tired, people. The card did make it easy for Chris to find me while I was in line, though. That was cool.

Lots of people took pictures of the Rain. They thought it was super cool, couldn't figure out how I did it, and wanted too know if it was really uncomfortable (which, except for not being able to sit down, it wasn't). I was actually kind of embarrased to be wearing it - I'd forgotten how bad the paint job was. Once we finally got our room (with me still in line), Jean got her Tomoyo outfit on and brought my (girly-fide) sock Kero and hung out with me in line until she had to run off to AX idol judging. It was cool :) Hung out with Anne for the rest of the day, running back to the room after getting out of the line in order to consume peanut butter and bread.

Gripe no. 2: Bellboy managed to mishandle my bag, smashing the jar of plum jelly inside. Pink goo all over everything. Luckily, the Koenma and most of the Sailor Moon costumes were in plastic bags. As for everything else... much sadness. Had to rinse a lot of stuff out, then iron it in order to get it dry. Also managed to get jelly on my shirt, and so had to borrow a (pink) shirt from Anne. Felt sad.

Then we wandered around, unsuccessfully tried to find mbp in Artist's Alley (we went back Sat. and Sun. but never did find her), and stalked cosplayers. When we wanted to go anywhere, we had to add 5 minutes to walking time for people wanting to take pictures of the Rain. It was a pain, because they would start to take a picture of my back and I wouldn't know. Anne had to hold doors open for me - she was the official Clow card groupie.

Finally ended up ditching the card in the room and going to the yaoi panel. Saw Chris and his girlfriend, Vanessa, there. Inside, he insisted that he had not been dragged there. We didn't believe him, with good reason. Anne and I worshipped Talya Firedancer from afar throughout the panel, took note of titles of interesting shonen ai manga coming out in the US. Went back to the room when the panel was over, and got to sleep at a decent time.

Saturday was declared Sailor Moon day by Jean months before con, because that was the day she had free. Unfortunately, in the end we only had two sailor scouts, Jean as Super Sailor Saturn and me as Super Sailor Moon, and Anne as Mistress 9. Never did find Lynleigh, who was supposed to be Uranus. Again the problem with people stopping us every 5 ft in order to take pictures. Mandy regretted much that she put so much time and effort into her costume - couldn't get anywhere w/o being stopped :(

Anne and I met up with Emily for part of the day, and went to the dealer's room to drool at the shonen ai. I got a cute little Hikaru keychain (from Hikaru no Go. I blame Yukon Makoto, who does 10k Commotion for getting me into the series. Went to random viewing rooms, I think we saw Sayuuki. Very much disappointed - it might just be that we saw the dub, but the slow pacing sucked so much that the storyline didn't make up for it. We also hit Artist's Alley again, though I once again could not turn the pages (gloves suck). I did, however, get to meet Fireball, who does Kagerou. Much hero-worship on my part - I adore her art and the storyline for Kagerou. Anne spotted Talya Firedancer from affar in Artist's Alley, and we stood in awe of her greatness.

Interesting story: Anne and I were stalking cosplayers between the convention center and the Hilton, and someone with a video camera on tripod stopped me for a picture. I figured, "Sure, why not?" Other people had used video cameras to take pictures earlier in the day, and I figured that this was a similar set up. Then, after getting her camera ready, she walked over with a microphone and proceeded to interview me! I totally freaked out, and then, after she was all done and we'd gone somewhere else, I realized that I forgot what website she'd said the interview would be up on! Does anyone know? I really don't know general fansites...

Sunday was Seki panel and Masquerade day. Also it was "random cosplay day" - i.e., the one day Jean, Anne, and I didn't have a coordinated cosplay thing going on. I was Miboshi (costume thrown together previous weekend) while Anne wore my Koenma costume. After hitting the dealer's room in the morning afternoon and purchasing much manga, we spent a lot of time in the shade between the convention center and the Hilton reading said manga. Perhaps three people recognized who I was, everyone else just wanted to know whether I'd shaved my head to go with the costume (no, I'm not that crazy). Few pictures were taken, though I know for a fact there a photo floating around somewhere of Miboshi reading vol. 1 of FAKE. Scaryness.

Anne and I also went to the beginning of the Seki panel. Stupidly, we left the manga in the room, so we had nothing to do in line (and when you're in the sun and only wearing a toga and bike shorts, with nothing to do, life is Not Happy). We ended up in the back, but that was just as well, because we had to leave early in order to make it to the Webcomics panel. Ooo... Webcomics. Unfortunately, I'd only heard of one of the comics mentioned, though the guy leading the panel had commented on SpaceHunter_X a while back. That was cool.

Eventually we went back to the room, got the manga, and went to Masq. Read said manga in line and while waiting for Masq to start. Other than the music being lost for Jean's group, Masq was pretty darn good. Anne and I were disappointed that they didn't show the AMVs, though. And I was slightly ticked that I had to stay until the very end, since Anne wanted to find out who won what.

Gripe no. 3: Lighting in the Masq room. I was ruining my eyes trying to read Ghost (to be called such around me and not by its hideous American name ::shudder::)! Grr.

I swear I flashed someone while wearing the Miboshi outfit.

Monday was G-boys day. Despaired at being able to successfully bind my boosom, and so ended up being a chesty Heero (sadness). Anne and I hit AMV until 11:30, then went to the dealer's room with Jean, where went searched for vol.s 2 and 3 of Ghost (success!) and decently priced Gravitation cds (no success - only Gravitation cds found were $25-$35).

Forgot to hit Artist's Alley one last time, but we figure mbp probably wasn't there anyway. Got picked up at 12:45 by my mom. Went back to Culver. The end :)

I don't know about Anne, but I had a good time :) Jean want's to do KH1 cosplay next year, I'm trying to figure out uses for the blond wig. Oh! I could do Gash (from Konjiki no Gash Bell)! But I've only seen 3 eps...

Hmm... Once again I do not get the history class I wanted (Hist 1B). Must settle with second best. Fall quarter for Mandy:
