A small smile on his face, Ian leaned back against the wall of the stairwell and watched as Teddy rubbed at his lips, “We’re going to have to stop doing that if you want to keep this a secret.”
Teddy nodded, “Yeah, I know. It’s not - it’s not going to be forever, Ian.”
“It can’t be. I meant what I said - I’m not going back in the closet. And I can’t be single, forever.”
He stepped forwards, took hold of Ian’s hands and tangled their fingers together, “You won’t be.”
“Good. We should get back - people are going to be looking for us.”
“Actually, I don’t really feel like going back in. I think I’m just going to head home.”
“Right,” Ian straightened up and glanced back down the stairs, glad to see that they were still alone, “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.” He smirked, pressed a small kiss on the corner of Teddy’s lips and turned to head down the stairs, forced himself not to look back; he didn’t want to look too desperate.
---
Teddy tapped his pen against the edge of his desk as he waited for class to start. The bell had gone five minutes ago and the teacher still hadn’t arrived. Neither had Ian. His tapping grew faster as he thought back to the night before, wondered whether it was Ian who had got cold feet this time. He glanced at the empty seat next to him - the one that he’d saved for Ian.
Last night had been a turning point for them, or at least he’d thought it had been. Maybe he hadn’t managed to convince Ian, after all. Maybe Ian had been caught up in the moment and had changed his mind once they’d parted. Maybe-
“Penny for your thoughts?”
His head snapped up and he smiled when he saw Ian, “You’re lucky the teacher’s late, too.”
Ian shrugged, “I get lucky quite a lot.” He scraped the chair back and sat down, waving to someone at the other end of the room.
“You-” He broke off, laughing, and dropped the pen down onto the desk, “How was the rest of your night?”
“I didn’t stay much longer after I saw you.”
“How come?”
“I had an early morning. And the party was getting kind of boring.” His lips quirked as he raised his eyebrows at Teddy.
He nodded and looked around the classroom, saw that everyone was caught up in their own conversations, “I was thinking we could hang out tonight, if you want.”
“Oh, I want,” Ian grinned, “Straight after school.”
“Yeah, great,” He coughed and straightened up as the teacher hurried into the room. The lesson dragged by, despite the late start, but he could feel Ian’s gaze on him the whole time and it felt kind of nice, knowing that someone cared. For now, he stared at the front of the room but it was okay because he knew that, some time soon, he’d be able to look back at Ian and not be afraid.
