The first time that Castiel ate an ice-cream sundae was totally unplanned. Really. In fact, there was a chance that he was coerced into it.

He’d only dropped in to inform Dean, very politely, that if he and Sam didn’t return to hunting, the whole world would once more be at risk of ending. Dean had nodded, given Sam a pointed look as his brother had stalked away and eaten a spoonful of his ice-cream.

“I’ve been telling Sammy that for weeks but he wanted me to try the apple-pie life. How’s things at your end?” He licked the spoon.

“Messy.”

“Huh. Oh man, you have got to try this ice-cream.” He licked his lips.

Castiel shook his head, “No, thank you. I don’t eat ice-cream.”

“You don’t eat ice-cream?”

“That is correct.”

“Why?” Dean placed his spoon down, rubbed his mouth and sat back to wait for an answer.

He hesitated at the look on Dean’s face and then shrugged, “Why would I? I don’t need ice-cream to survive.”

“You don’t - oh. Please tell me you’ve had ice-cream before. You have, right?”

He shook his head. Dean mirrored his action.

“Okay, Cas. I can’t let you live for one more hour without ice-cream. Here.” He shoved a spoonful towards the angel.

Gingerly, Castiel took the spoon from Dean, sniffed it and took a tentative lick.

“It’s cold.”

Dean smirked, “That’s the point, Cas. It’s good though, right?” He smiled.

“It’s…acceptable. Too sweet.”

“Too sweet? What? Cas-” Dean broke off as the angel vanished, “Damn.”

---

The second time that Castiel ate an ice-cream sundae he was definitely coerced into it. The Winchester brothers had been chasing a pair of demons when the black-eyed creatures had split up, forcing Sam and Dean to do the same. He’d been watching over them and, after a moment’s thought, had followed Dean, the more reckless brother. It had been a good decision.

Now, Dean was lying on the bed - Castiel looked back at the hunter again, just to make sure - pouting. The demon had surprised him and Dean, though quick to recover, had struggled to hold his own in the fight. Castiel had waited until it looked like Dean was going to collapse before intervening - Dean had his pride, after all.

He frowned as Dean pulled an icepack away from his still bleeding forehead. So far, Dean had refused all of his attempts to help. Pride, again.

“Can I help?”

Dean scowled, “No.”

“Well, can I get you anything?” He took a step closer to the bed and stopped.

“No.”

“Right.”

“Yes.” Dean sat up, “Yes, there is something.” He threw the icepack down and pushed himself up off the bed. “Ice-cream.”

“What?”

“Take me for ice-cream.”

Half an hour later, Castiel wondered quite how he’d managed to end up sharing a chocolate ice-cream sundae with Dean.

---

The third time that Castiel found himself eating an ice-cream sundae it was only when he licked raspberry sauce off his lips, glanced down at his empty glass and then back up across the table that he realized he was alone.

---

“This is the best ice-cream yet.”

Dean grinned, “I told you so, Cas.”

He opened his mouth to reply but couldn’t think of anything suitable. He settled for having another spoonful of ice-cream.

“Where’s Sam.”

“Library. He wasn’t in the mood for ice-cream today.” Dean scowled; Sam hadn’t wanted ice-cream the last three times Castiel had been in town, either.

Castiel dropped his spoon, “You asked Sam?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

He thought for a moment. “Well, I didn’t think it was proper protocol to bring your brother on your dates.”

Dean gaped. Then gaped some more.

“Dean?”

“Dates? As in, dates?”

He nodded, “I thought you knew.”

“Oh. Right. Yeah, Cas. I-” Dean broke off, thinking back over the last few weeks.

“What?”

“You know what? You’re right. It’s best that Sam keeps going to the library.”
