Note: I’m using examples from throughout the seasons here, including recent episodes so watch out for spoilers if you aren’t up to date. There’s quite a lot of references to The Lonely Heart’s Job which makes up for the fact I didn’t do a reaction post for that, I hope. Okay, onto the meta:

I was going to say that while I see where you're coming from with your arguments, I disagree with your conclusions regarding Nate & Sophie - and interestingly, it's something I didn't realize until I made this video with both of the on-screen kisses Nate had up until that point:
See the difference? In the kiss with Sophie, Nate is confident to the point of arrogance. He is *absolutely* secure in his feelings and what he's doing to express them. On the other hand, I think it can be argued that Sophie is genuinely terrified of what's happening. That isn't just emotionally overwhelmed - that's *scared*.
With Maggie, *she* is the aggressor - leaving Nate confused and unsure as to what's going on and how he's supposed to be reacting.
"The Lonely Hearts Club Job" cemented everything for me - I think the *only* thing that Nathan Ford is 100% sure of in his life is that he loves Sophie Devereaux. I don't think the problem has ever been their feelings for each other either - the problem is each of them dropping their guard long enough to admit the truth and act on it.
And I think the reason they're both terrified of taking that step is that they both understand perfectly well if Sophie drops her emotional guard, Nate will hurt her. He won't do it intentionally, and doing it will destroy him, but he will do it because at heart he's a controlling bastard and his father's son, and that's what he does.

I definitely see the point you're making - I don't think I really explained mine properly because I definitely don't think what I said is the only layer to their relationship - and I also really saw it when I re-watched The Lonely Heart's Club Job last night. It's not really something I've thought about before - I knew they both had fears but your take on it really makes sense so thanks for commenting :)
(I don't know whether any of the above ramble made sense but it's not even 10am where I am yet so I'm using that as my excuse!)
