The Boys' Night Out Job Reaction and Meta

The Boys' Night Out Job:

I’ve been looking forward to this episode all week - The Girl’s Night Out Job did such a great job of teasing this episode without giving too much away and it’s going to be so interesting to see how it fits in with what was going on last episode.

Hurley at the start - dancing in his car in the same way he did in his original introduction in The 12 Step Job - show, why are you so perfect? Lovely continuity! Ooh, as is the fact it’s the thief who runs out in front of his car so it ties into last time!

I loved the set up at the start of Poker with Bonanno and Eliot’s friend Shelley. ‘If I told you I’d have to kill you’ and all of them laughed and then we had Eliot: ‘yeah, he actually would.’ It just sums up the spirit of the team with cops and more questionable characters playing alongside each other.

Also, maybe I’m reading too much into it but, aside from being an awesome character and providing some comic moments, I think the fact that Shelley was there was actually a huge deal. Eliot’s always been a bit reluctant to share his past with the team and Shelley being there, someone from Eliot’s ‘other life’ as it were being allowed to interact with the team suggests that

a)Shelley is important to Eliot, Eliot trusts him enough to let him into Nate’s apartment.

b) Eliot is feeling more comfortable sharing bits of himself with the team - maybe it’s because they know about Moreau and things can’t get any worse, maybe it’s just because he’s realised they’re in it for the long haul. But either way it’s important.

I hope we get to see more of Shelley because he was awesome! And it’s Sean Faris and that’s also pretty awesome :)

The dynamics between Nate and Hurley in this episode were really great - I loved the fact that Hurley finally got not just one hug but several! And it allowed for an interesting perspective on Nate’s drinking because there was someone who had managed to stay sober for two years. I also loved that, although Hurley was a better person, he still had that naivety that was part of the reason I ended up liking him in The 12 Step Job.

The supporting cast was used so well in this episode - Hurley, Shelley, Bonanno but also the two Irish guys arguing about the layers of the church and just being generally funny. Loved the line about Boy Scouts.

‘Let me shoot him Eliot’ - Hardison! Aside from being quite funny, the fact that Eliot wouldn’t let Hardison shoot the guy also resonated because Eliot doesn’t want anyone else in his team to have to ever do that.

Eliot’s pep talk to Hardison was pure genius. ‘If I said that then that means I would be thinking about you and Parker which I never do’ (Sorry, but you clearly do, Eliot.)

Hardison trying to be assertive to prove a point to Eliot (because he actually tries to impress Eliot a lot). And then ‘By the way, I don’t think that bouncer outside is affiliated with these guys. Just so you know’ - it’s the sort of subtle humour that Leverage does best.

Eliot ‘let me take this one’ - Hardison ‘get your ass back.’ I thought this was a lovely echo of The 12 Step Job, with the ‘bring your ass’ line.

Aww, Eliot let Hardison win rock, paper, scissors! I love, love, love that.

Basically, this episode was just fantastic.
