So, it took me AAAAGES to watch this episode which was very frustrating but I’ve finally managed it! It was a good episode, as far as I’m concerned. I liked the fact that it addressed Dean’s drinking, that Sam was trying to get Dean to unload (because Sam has always done that) and that the MOTW story mirrored something to do with the character arc of the boys; it made it nice and tidy.
Grossness, scary-wise, I’m actually surprised that they got away with so much in this episode. I mean, we had: a woman being electrocuted by the hair salon thing, a guy getting killed with a nail gun, the heart in the cupcakes (I’m never going to be able to eat one again without thinking about this scene!), a woman losing her head and anything else I might have missed. It was all quite explicit, too, I thought. Maybe I was being squeamish but this episode really did seem to have more gore than normal (I don’t usually get creeped out/squeamish about SPN so that fact that I noticed has to mean something, right?) Anyway, it was an awesome sort of squeamish; the kind only Supernatural can do!
I love the continuity in this season with regards to the leviathans; I think it’s being woven into the episodes very well and I love that there’s always that underlying threat there. And even this witch - who is, arguably, one of the more powerful motws we’ve see - couldn’t kill one, could only put it temporarily out of action.
They’re really going for selling the Dean’s drinking storyline now, huh? And they’re selling it pretty effectively from where I’m sitting. There was that one moment where Dean made a snarky comment over the phone to Sam (calling him Lance) and then he went straight into the liquor store and that, to me, was genius writing/directing/whatever because it made me go ‘huh’ and ‘Deean’ and ‘fudge’ (expect using less polite language.) I like how they’re showing Sam noticing it, saying things about it, too, rather than ignoring it. I think that fits in very well with where Sam is at the moment; he wants to be there for Dean and, apart from Dean’s secret with Amy, their relationships is good enough where Sam wants to be there for him.
If I have one criticism of this episode it’s that there was too much of the witches and not enough Sam and Dean. I get that they wanted to use the actors etc but it did kind of feel like the balance wasn’t quite right. That said, the bits with Maggie and Don were, for the most part, enjoyable and done well so I guess I can forgive the show for that niggle!
I LOVED the whole Sam and Dean acting as councillors thing, it was pretty funny. Thought there was a nice little foreshadowing earlier in the episode too where Dean first says about the guy cheating; ‘it’s a vague’ sort of thing…Dean: ‘she caught you cheating.’
There were some great one-liners in this episode, too. ‘Don’t make me bring up the renaissance’; ‘Lance Armstrong’, the Bewitched and Nicole Kidman bit. My favourite, though, had to be:
‘That’s going way too deep there, cowboy.’ *coughs*
And, yes, Sam being all sweaty after running was quite lovely! (And I loved the other version of that scene - how did Jensen keep a straight face?! He must have had a lot of practice! And, omg, Jared’s so funny and awesome and I love them both. And I loved how Jensen ad-libbed so perfectly. And the chair went over and Jared walked off and Jensen started stretching - and he was so still in character as Dean there and then Jared came back on and told him how to do it right and I love these guys so much! I’m getting off track here! But yeah, Jared is really pretty flexible!)
In terms of the future, I’m wondering what will happen when the truth about Amy does come out. Personally, I think that Sam might not react quite as badly as Dean thinks he will. I’m not saying he won’t be upset/angry but I think he and Dean are in a good place right now (compared to where they’ve been in the past) and I’m not sure whether the revelation is enough to really tear them apart again. I can see Sam being angry/upset BUT I can also see understanding where Dean is coming from/realising how guilty Dean is already feeling. I’ve probably called it all wrong but, there you go, this is my head canon for now!
I’m also wondering whether there is going to be some sort of an intervention at some point. Dean drinking has always been a part of the show but they’re really ramping it up right now, showing Sam noticing, showing Dean almost acknowledge that he shouldn’t be drinking (when he put the whisky back down towards the start of the episode) and it feels to me like that’s where it might be heading.
Anyway, really liked the episode and I think the season is continuing to be very strong. The acting by both Jared and Jensen and the guest casts has been awesome. And we have that stretching clip! I’m a very content fan right now!
