The seminar this morning was so awesome :D I found out that I already knew two people who are in it from the summer school which is great because it means that:

a)I know someone
and

canny / adjective
intelligent, careful and showing good judgement, especially in business or politics:
a canny politician Ç a canny move
(Oxford)

Any other meanings? I really want to know now! Next time I come over, I want a dictionary for English/Geordie.

I'm happy to hear you've found a good group of people right on the first day.
I think it was at Leeds University where we had a similar talk on humanities degrees. I found it quite motivating.

:D In Newcastle it can also be used in another way, to say that a person is 'okay'/nice/alright...that sort of thing. So, like, if I met someone who was friendly I might say 'I like him, he's canny' :D

Congratulations! "Canny" is now on my "variations of English" list. What can I say, I'm a bit of a language nerd. Thanks! :D (I'll probably never be able to use it though.)

And by chance I found an idiom with Newcastle I hadn't heard before: carry, take, etc. coals to Newcastle

Oh god, yes! I'm so sorry I didn't reply to your mail, I'm currently at a stage with the story where I think it's a complete fail and I should just leave it out.
Alternatively, I might post it today/tomorrow/something like that.

But your work is greatly appreciated as always! You know I tend to freak out at times.
