Douglas Adams

I am finally, finally, reading the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galexy. For years my friends have been telling me I would love it, or talking excitedly about references from it (42, towels, Don't Panic, etc), and based on the average nerd quotient of my most Adams-enthusiastic friends, I felt pretty certain I would enjoy it.

One of the junior company dancers has loaned me her massive copy of the five books all in one. I have been devouring it (well, at a rate that's pretty fast for me). Thus far I have said "wow, so THAT'S where that comes from!!" about ten times, commented on his brilliance incessantly, wanted to quote about 537 passages of text, and laughed so hard I could hardly breathe.

I LOVE THIS MAN!!!

I must be getting back into a reading kick, because I just finished Captain Sully's book, Highest Duty (thanks mom!). It's a fantastic memoir, all about his life, his family and the values they taught him, his relationship with his wife and daughters, what flying means to him, and (of course) the intimate story of landing Flight 1549 in the Hudson. He brings up so much to think about, so many ways he has tried to live the best life he can, not perfectly but with integrity. I've remained somewhat obsessed with him and all things related to Flight 1549 ever since it happened; the 60 minutes interviews and the computer simulation video of the flight have captivated me. But Sully himself is an incredible human being, even though he presents himself as nothing other than an honest and hardworking man doing his job the best he can and enjoying it along the way. I heartily recommend the book to anybody, even if you aren't still crazed about the Hudson landing. It's a good read all around. :-)
