lightning flashes

The weekend has been a fairly disappointing one, as far as normal weekend stuff goes. Lately, I have been doing much more community things but much less with friends around town. This weekend was further warped by the 6 hours I put in at the office yesterday. I enjoy getting things done and helping out, but it sure wears me out and makes me appreciate my alone and at home time.

I was grateful to go to D&B with the new engineer on Friday, even if it messed me up for my 'workday' (still uposted, :-) on Saturday. With the meeting today taking three hours out of the afternoon, I haven't had much of a weekend. DH and I did work on staining the tables for the family room that he constructed last weekend, and I did get some ddr time tonight.

On the drive to the meeting I mused about how I was missing the most interesting part of the World Cup and resenting the bad scheduling when I heard a line that broke that mild funk. 'Guy Noir' on Prairie Home Companion says in favor of Iowa something along the lines of 'Being in Texas in July and August is like knowing an angry God'.

The radio show made me remember yesterday about a sign seen in front of the nearest church to the house (the one that has a huge glowing cross that looks like it is suspended in a dark sky just over our neighborhood like a four-pointed star in a failed-perspective nativity scene). The sign advertising the next sermon stated "The Sacrament of Failure" (sounds really interesting really). DH looked the definition because it didn't really sound right to me. Do they mean that failure has a sacred place in the church? This is the definition he read to me.

sacrament

n : a formal religious act conferring a specific grace on those who receive it;

Well it was very funny to me at the time, needless to say. It made me think of a well-dressed slapstick routine, the eye-poke blocked at the last second. Perhaps like a first communion or confirmation ceremony. I'm not sure what the outward symbol of the internal grace of failure would be. Got any suggestions?
