When I opened my curtain this morning, I thought a storm was on the way, so menacing the sky looked. But I just went jogging in Alexandra Park, and looking down from the top of the hill, I suddenly realised that this is no bad weather. This is smog! London's atmosphere and skies are saturated with fumes from
a fire in Hertfordshire. Chilling stuff. Apparently the blast was heard from the Netherlands. This puzzles me because I think I was awake at 6am, and my window was open. I seem to basically pay no attention whatsoever to outside noises...
The first time I saw Alexandra Palace, six years ago, with its half-visible courtyards and burnt down facades, it reminded me strongly of those evil castles you visit in
Quake, and in particular one called Gloom Keep:
I don't play Quake too often these days, but just now, looking up at the Palace, with its wall weirdly luminescent against a quasi-black background, I kept expecting to hear a fiend hopping about on the roof...
